Man who says co-workers served him tainted spaghetti to get $1.43 million.

LOS ANGELES - The city will pay $1.43 million to settle claims by a black firefighter who said he suffered harassment and discrimination after co-workers served him spaghetti laced with dog food, officials announced Friday.

The settlement between the city and Tennie Pierce was reached before the firefighter’s lawsuit was to go to trial Monday.

Under the terms of the deal, Pierce will receive about $60,000 in back pay, city clerk Frank Martinez said in a statement. Pierce, who has been on unpaid leave, also agreed to resign from the Fire Department and drop all claims against the city.

He was hazed after participating in the hazing others and gets a million for it. Good work if you can get it. Too bad those photos of him hazing other firefighters popped up, or he would have got twice that much.

I don't think this sneaky POS should be getting anything at all.

An enlightened response.

In any event, this isn't a case of racial discrimination. It's someone who was convinced playing race against his co-workers would be profitable. It really has no legs to stand on and should be thrown out.

That's what I like about the court system. Cases that have no merit are thrown out. If this case had no merit there is no way the city would be settling for this type of money. Nuisance, pay-to-go-away money is in the $3K range. There obviously was something there.

Plus, this is not like the NJ city which had to pay a homeless man about $250,000 for barring him sfrom the library. The city has much more of an obligation to an employee.

Racism in its purest form. Pierce obviously didn't deserve anything, as a first-class prankster and "ringleader" himself of many years practice. (and proud of his nick-name 'Big Dog')

But the "powers that be" dreaded going to trial in front of a "downtown jury" (L.A. talk for all-minority, mostly black). Same dynamics as during the Rodney King case. The brave council members feared a "downtown jury" would award many times the amount that Pierce would get if they just "bought him off".(That's what the Mayor meant by 'the best deal for the taxpayers')---it was ASSUMED that a black jury would favor a black 'victim' with a huge award. Sounds very insulting to blacks, but of course, it does have some precedence. Multiculturalism at it best !......
By the way, Pierce agreed to 'resign' from the Fire Department---I'm a little hazy on this. If he was in the 'right', why should he resign? If not, why should he get the money?...very mysterious.

Let me tell you one thing because I have worked in this area for about 30 years: For $1.43 million, if you think you have a case you go to trial and take your chances on jury nullification. No city with fiduciary responsibility for taxpayer money caves in for that amount.

Where the city has a $2 million retention (ie 'deductable' to you) under their insurance coverage.
