What a stupid thread. No one will even address the point that the 77 cents figure is absolute garbage and does NOT compare similar jobs.

All you guys do is name call back and forth and refuse to address the actual facts of the matter. It's really quite pathetic.

Imagine the gnashing of teeth if the bill passed and employers reacted by cutting men's pay.

Wrong, when all things are equal men are paid more.

The Gender Wage Gap by Occupation — IWPR

" A study from the American Association of University Women showed that among recent college graduates, women make just 80 percent of men’s salaries—right out of the gate, before having children. Is that because of the jobs women choose, such as teaching, which tend to be low-paying?

Even in teaching jobs, in a predominantly female profession, women end up getting paid less than men. In fact, when teaching became a more female profession, the average salary of teachers went down. It’s not just a problem in teaching. It happens across industries. Male hairdressers make more than women as well.

your a realtor...should you get the same pay as EVERYONE else, even though you might be the BEST AT WHAT YOU DO???
Lol, you randomly pick realtors? An occupation that is nearly 100% filled with independent self employed contractors that are prided based on transactions completed. Pay there is not based on merit, it is based on sales activity. FYI, few realtors are salaried or hourly employees of a broker. There may be a few, but most are "renting" a desk from a broker.

As a former realtor, I gotta say it is one of the most corrupt abuse ridden back stabbing occupation out there. Women and their "sex appeal" do have an advantage.

A better occupation to look at is a real estate property manager. There, in a largely women's occupation, women earn 60% of what men earn.

oh please

EVERY job that I have seen women in they make the SAME as thier male counterparts based on SENIORITY and SKILL

the MYTH of the glass ceiling is just that..a MYTH

We often hear about a "wage gap" between women and men. In 1992, the ratio of female to male, year-round, fulltime earnings was 71 cents to the dollar. This includes workers of all ages and all types of jobs. Among workers 25 to 34, the 1992 ratio was 82 cents on the dollar. And in a real "apples to apples" comparison, the gap narrows more. June E. O'Neill, director of the Congressional Budget Office, did a study based on the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth by Ohio State University's Center for Human Resources Research. O'Neill found that among people 27 to 33 who have never had a child, women's earnings were about 98% of men's. Similar results occur if you compare the earnings of women and men of the same education and experience in the same professions.

Women also have created jobs, for themselves and others. In 1980, there were about 2 million women-owned businesses with about $25 billion in sales. in 1996, according to the National Foundation for Women Business Owners, nearly 8 million companies with more than $2.25 trillion in sales are owned by women. One in four American workers is employed by a woman-owned business.

In many occupations, including speech pathology and financial analysis, women earn far more than men. When it comes to college degrees, women outpace men by a fair shot. According to the Wall Street Journal, “single, childless women between ages 22 and 30 were earning more than their male counterparts in most U.S. cities, with incomes that were 8 percent on average.”

Just making Crap up now? No link? Must be a very "credible" source, LOL.

Study after study says otherwise.

If this would have become law, it would be devastating for women.

In a nutshell, an employer would be required to keep a lot of additional records that may, at some point, be used in a lawsuit. If the jury decides the reasons for the plaintiff's lower pay was not sound, they can assign punitive damages. Not just compensation damages, punitive as well. We all know that means the sky is the limit. Companies do not like an unknown coming back to haunt them. They are almost forced to make sure women make at least as much as the highest male in the same position. When that becomes true, they will simply hire fewer women. Too expensive

On another tack, IF women really were paid 77% as much as men for the same work, there would not an unemployed woman. Companies are always looking to save money and if it were as simple as hiring a woman at 77% the salary, companies would be doing this in a heartbeat.

This is all a political move and frankly, I feel democrats think so little of women that they assume they would not be able to figure this out.

As Senator Mitchell said "We don't think America suffers from a lack of litigation, We have a jobless problem. We have a debt problem. We have a deficit problem. We got a lot of problems. Not enough lawsuits is not one of them."

rubbish. we do in fact have laws ALREADY on the books requiring equal pay for equal work. what we dont need is the government forcing everyone to get the same pay regardless of seniority, etc. for instance, if i worked at a place for twenty years, why should someone come in with NO experience, and NO seniority in the company and make the SAME money i make? even if we do the same job. and why should someone else get the same paycheck i get if i work overtime and they dont? or why should someone be able to take several months off from work for what ever reason, and then come back and still get any pay raises that happened in the mean time?

Nice try reflecting, but all those factors are considered. Experience, education right to hours worked women are paid less for the same jobs.
