No one needs to shop at Whole Foods to eat healthy.

Why does it matter that Hostess cupcakes have foul ingredients in them? Don't eat them.

Seems like a catch 22 to me. People buy the cheap, junky rubbish because it's either -sweet, salty, or fatty (tasty to most people) and often comes in nice shiny packets -things that all appeal to our inner primate. Manufacturers make it because people buy so much of it.

I'm not sure if legislation is the answer, but I think that producers/advertisers should lay off the kids. Adults (in theory) should be able to make informed choices. Not so with kids.

Other than that, get outside and get more active.

Correct. You can get cheap healthy food at any grocery store.

Reduce calories consumed, and your body will slow down .... increase intake and it speeds up ... quite contrary to what most have been led to believe, and counter intuitive. That's why "dieting" doesn't work ... it can't work, and therefore, willpower has very little to do with it. Knowledge, not willpower is the key here. Small, frequent meals, and increased activity will lead to leaner body mass ... dieting will actually do the opposite .... restrict your intake (willpower) will signal your body that you are starving, and your body will respond by conserving, so when you do eat, more is stored as fat. Maintain a good, steady flow of food, and your body tells itself that there is no emergency ... no famine .. and therefore does not have to conserve much.

.
You said a mouthful with this point. It is not about dieting, but a lifestyle change of committing to eating much better. Most people only care about their weight because of what others think of them, not the health implications.

Hypothyroidism is a big reason some cannot lose weight.. their body does not burn off calories and they actually cannot stay warm and have no tolerance to cold because of that fact. Some have an enlarged thyroid called a goiter because their thyroid is not acting as it should.. so not every fat person gets fat because of what they eat. If they diet they will just slow down their metabolism as that is what their problem is already.

The 5th option in the poll should have been:

Do nothing. The problem will die away.

Unless fat people have been under a rock the last 30 years, they know what foods are bad to put in your mouth. It isn't Rocket Science. If a person chooses to stuff themselves with that crap, they are going to end up on a slab before their time...it's just that simple.

Grab some stones and some willpower and start eating lean meats, veggies, fruits, and if you have to eat bread...make it 100% whole wheat. Once you're at a safe weight, begin to exercise....ANY exercise. When you work out on a regular basis, your metabolism works like crazy, and the last thing you'll want to eat is a big, disgusting meal.

If that doesn't do it, get your thyroid checked.

Please I would sooner eat fish from a sewer then anything farmed in Asia.

We are doing better than this. We now have the East Asian Snakehead fish established in the Potomac. At a recent fishing competion a contestant landed one weighing 26 lbs. In China they can get up to 90-100 lbs so you might be able to fill a freezer with one or two of those.

Maybe learn from history, not necessarily American?

Soviet Union. Massive propaganda, like "healthy spirit in a healthy body" carved or painted on buildings.

Extensive diners network to allow people to eat 3-4 course lunches (and enough education so that they choose this, not some junk).

Only natural ingredients - e.g. lemonade was made from lemon juice. Absolutely no glutamate.

People were fat... Even supposedly hot girls in movies (of course beauty standards at the time were different, but not to that extend).

Soviet Union became no more. Russian government followed Milton Friedman's prescriptions and ruined the economy, ripping people off all their money in process.

For the first time in history the stereotype that Russian girls are the most beautiful became true

Russia is rich now, people are getting rather rich too, and they are gaining weight. And there are posts on Russian forums, like - "what the funk, I just paid attention to high-school girls on the street, and almost all of them have at least some belly".

Maybe it's the cost of food that matters?
