• Some schools have ceded almost total control of their staff and finances to for-profit management companies that decide how the schools’ money is spent. The Life Skills Center of Miami-Dade County, for example, pays 97 percent of its income to a management company as a “continuing fee.” And when the governing board of two affiliated schools in Hollywood tried to eject its managers, the company refused to turn over school money it held — and threatened to press criminal charges against any school officials who attempted to access the money.

Many management companies also control the land and buildings used by the schools — sometimes collecting more than 25 percent of a school’s revenue in lease payments, in addition to management fees. The owners of Academica, the state’s largest charter school operator, collect almost $19 million a year in lease payments on school properties they control in Miami-Dade and Broward counties, audit and property records show.

Charter schools often rely on loans from management companies or other insiders to stay afloat, making charter school governing boards beholden to the managers they oversee. Loans to two Pompano Beach schools were disguised as gifts in financial documents to avoid scrutiny from the school district and make struggling schools appear solvent, the schools’ former managers said in court papers.

No, not a student. Instead of being presumptive and slightly condescending, try to ask people about their background in the future. Well, see when you siphon wealth from the general population to serve the agenda of the few, you should feel economic pain. You should realize that not having a strong public sector will indeed lead to higher highs and lower lows. This is common sense. Many have noted that the overarching theme of "small" government is really lessening the middle class.

The public sector is supposed to have no profit motivation. It is suppose to buttress the population (allowing for people to have security, education, and resources available to have a viable private sector). Without a strong public sector, specifically in terms of education, you end up creating wide disparities and thus a more volatile market. Why specifically education? Education enables innovation and a skilled workforce. Those that gain a good education have a higher chance of attaining middle/upper class status. Thus having schools with teachers that are happy and productive is essential. I would much rather send my child to a teacher that is not working two jobs and is more passionate about their profession than a teacher who is burned out. Part of the reason why children do better in more affluent districts is because the teachers in those districts have more seniority (thus more satisfied, devoted, and knowledgeable).

Cutting salaries and jobs for the public sector is the worst economic policy that one can do at this time. If we want to trim the fat, we should look at corporate handouts, tax evaders, ending the Bush era tax cuts, and cut defense spending.

To be fair, the right does a great job at advertising and selling its cause. That is one thing the left is really lacking. Wage stability is not sensational, its too practical. Union thugs out to strike it rich is more sensational and thus more likely to cause an emotional reaction.

I agree, the left lacks in the marketing department. They tend to be too cerebral, too intellectual, and sometimes too boring. People don't want a college course lecture, people want reality tv. Dumb it down if you want people to buy your product.

Ending the tax cuts for everybody, or everybody but you?

Because ignorance is spreading in this country. Republicans have convinced people of all socio-economic levels that Unions are bad and serve no purpose.

Unions are un-American and have not served the working and middle class of this country (Unions ushered in the Middle Class).

So people too ignorant or lazy to research the history, current activities, and the benefit of Unions rely on the deluge of out of state Wisconsin money from Republicans hell bent on destroying Unions in this country.

So I may not know better than your alleged 2.2 million people (not workers) but from the poll results, I know more than quite a few of them.

Many teachers say they are being punished because they ran afoul of a vindictive boss or because they blew the whistle when somebody fudged test scores.

'You're gone'
"The principal wants you out, you're gone," said Michael Thomas, a high school math teacher who has been in a reassignment center for 14 months after accusing an assistant principal of tinkering with test results.

"The day just seemed to crawl by until I started painting," Cohen said, adding that others read, play dominoes or sleep. Cohen said she was charged with using abusive language when a girl cut her with scissors.

Thanks for posting an article about teachers and their rights being infringed upon in many instances. Glad they have a system of Due Process and Arbitration.

It seems to me the problem is that the number of arbitrators is too low and they meet too infrequent.
