From one of the sites that originally posted the story:

State considers $16.5 million contract for Amazon Kindles - Mobile - Nextgov.com

This article originally misstated the terms of the State Department’s agreement with Amazon and was misleading about the cost of each Kindle. NextGov regrets the error.
....
The price per unit is currently being worked out. It is expected to be in the ballpark of a recent pilot program where State purchased 6,000 Kindles for $980,000 for educational and e-diplomacy purposes, which works out roughly to a cost of $163 for each device.

“State has not and will not spend even a penny more than retail prices,” said Philippe Reines, spokesman for Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

The complete contract contains much more than just the devices.

That begs the question though....

Why is the US going through such an effort to teach English in other countries when we have such a great need here ?

It also shows how the numbers change once people get wind of them.

Give me a break. The story was wrong from the beginning. Probably why the Heritage Foundation apparently has pulled their version of the story.

Yeah. $16.5M for 5 years w/ a minimum of 2,500 custom Kindles became $16.5M for [...] 2,500 [...] Kindles.

Wait, are you the poster who likes to argue with people by calling them worthless? You know that's not actually a valid argument, right?
Stating that the story was biased because you dont like the source, doesnt make your postings worth reading. What EXACTLY did you disagree with?
