I am being sarcastic but that statement about learning spanish is the dumbest thing I have ever heard. Every major country and developing country is trying to learn english why the hell would we want spanish.
Yea, we don't need to learn stuff. We is Amerikans and no it all!!!

I haven't seen where any one has stated they hate any one. The thread is about language, not individuals. You have the advantage that many Americans don't that you know both languages. You admitted it can be annoying to have to translate.

Why do you put the burden on English speakers to learn a second language when immigrants should bear the responsiblity of learning the language of the country they are coming to? Why are you speaking of Espanophobia when immigrants are the ones refusing to learn the native language of the country they are seeking?

No matter how you try to package it, people coming here know the language used in this country is English and has been for decades. The responsibilty is on them.
Because If we were half as smart as we pretend to be we wouldn't be acting like a bunch of complacent Romans with superiority complexes.

America will fall if Americans decide they are god's gift to the world and that everyone must now pander to them.

We made English the #1 international business language. GREAT! Now lets start working on language #2... Spanish. After that we should go to #3, because there are also a billion people who would love Mandarin to be #1.

Acquiring Bilingualism is not easy, but it really isn't just about that. It's about broadening one's horizons, increasing their perspective and therefore improving their ability to compete on the world stage... a world far bigger than the USA. Understanding the culture next door is the first step to opening that door.

So that quote is a bit out-dated. And stop with the propaganda.
English is the MAIN language in the world now. NOT Spanish, NOT French. NOT German. NOT Russian. NOT Chinese. DEF English.

Spanish is of little use outside of LatAm or Spain. English is even becoming a big language in China. It's 2nd language IS English, NOT Spanish.

I spend half my day at work speaking Spanish... and I'm a good 800 miles North of the border. I also get paid money to do it (more than my English-only coworkers who otherwise do the same job), enough to live a decent middle-class life. That's not exactly "of little use".

...And about China... because of the Chinese Government planning ahead today, we are soon gonna see a world with hundreds of millions of young adult Chinese folks that speak both Mandarin AND English moving out into it vs maybe 50-70 million young adult Americans who only speak English and have difficulty even finding China on a map.

Who's gonna end up ruling the world? ... you tell me.

Fine, but I'll go with Canada over Mexico which is a pit of poverty, corruption and drugs these days.

What utter nonsense! Americans have been doing fine not learning a second langauge and the only language being pushed in this country is Spanish! The reason for that is because of the large number of Spanish speakers in our country illegally and other arrogant Hispanics who won't assimilate and respect the langauge of this country. Hardly any Americans are having to deal with foreign countries in a business setting where they would have to speak their foreign tongue. English is the langauge of business globally. Nice try, but no cigar.

That's right. When you work in a multinational corporation, English is the language spoken when all these folks get together from other countries.

I've worked on global teams and there's never been a question..the meetings are in English.
