Shouldn't English be the official language of this country? It was founded by English colonists afterall. Since they were the progenitors of this country I believe their language should be the standard for integration. I mean, in your own house or company speak whatever language you please, but English should be what immigrants should be expected to learn when coming to this country. I would think a medium of communication between fellow citizens would be most crucial to having a functioning society.
By joining the fight against illegal immigration, that's how. By making your congressman know that we will not accept the transformation of our country from an English speaking nation to a Spanish speaking by unassimilating immigrants and citizens. If they are illegal alien sympathizers which is the bulk of the problem then vote them out of office.
Oh don't think I haven't emailed him numerous times. I always get back this pat reply about how hard he's working for "my" interests in Congress.
Lloyd Doggett is very pro-amnesty and represents a sanctuary city (Austin).
You are over simplifying this. It isn't about occasionally hearing Spanish. It is all the time and everywhere! It is the signs, the press 2 for espanol, the constant barrage of Spanish ads. It is about what this all signifies and that is this is directly happening due to illegal immigration and many Hispanic-Americans refusing generation after generation of speaking English in public.
I live in the same general world as you do. Half my work is done in Spanish even.
I at least understand where people are coming from with regard to illegals, but I'm talking about American Citizens speaking Spanish because they want to.
Like my Spanish-speaking coworkers... ya'll probably know what I'm talking about, the "Hispanic club" that talks and jokes around with each other in Spanish in the break room and around the office. They all speak perfect English and swap back & forth almost without thinking about it.
It drives the Whites crazy! They get all huffy, leave, complain to the administrators, yada, yada.
Why? There is no good reason for feeling that way, only bad reasons... I admit I would probably feel the same except that I know what's going on and often join in and joke around or B.S. in Spanish with them too...
I have been approached in stores because I was speaking with my friends or on the phone in Spanish. My family came over shortly after the Mayflower on one side and in the early 1900s from Ukraine (with 2 generations who only spoke Yiddish and began successful businesses with mimimal English skills) on the other - I speak Spanish because of 10 years of hard work.
I'm sorry if others find it "rude" that they can't understand my private conversations. How dare people approach me when I'm with my friends (majority native-English speakers) while we speak Spanish?
I wonder how many of those saying "Speak the damn language!" have friends who are retirees in Mexico, Costa Rica, or Panama. When I lived in Mexico, half of the other expats there BARELY spoke English in addition to killing local businesses by demanding Walmarts and all the other comforts of home trail behind. Look at Lake Jalapa for a great example of what happens when gringos take over. It's not a one way street.

So you think it funny to torment and be rude to native English speakers on the job? Yes, that is the problem many Spanish speakers whether they be citizens or illegal aliens like to rub their langauge in our faces. If they want to speak Spanish why not do it in the privacy of their homes? Why do they"want" to speak Spanish out in public and disrespect our national language and tick off native English speakers? Afterall, English is our national langauge. Thanks for proving my point they are arrogant and have no respect for our nation's langauge.
Speaking of rudeness and arrogance. I used to work where there was a mixture of ethnicities. Many of them were Hispanics. A notice was posted on the bulletin board that English would be the only language spoken while on the clock. Breaks and lunches would be the exception. Well guess what, a Hispanic tore it right off the bulletin board in anger. When reported management backed off to their arrogance and decided to be PC instead. They wouldn't even back up their own notice. It ticked off all non-hispanics but that didn't matter I guess.
Here is another example of their effing arrogance. Employee meetings were held in both Spanish and English. Why? No one got hired that couldn't speak English. Yet the numerous Filapinos I worked with didn't get meetings in Tag-alog or some other Filapino dialect.

If you are with a majority of native English speakers then why did you all feel the need to converse in Spanish? And don't get on the usual rant that you have the right to speak any language you want. This is about rudeness and disrespect for our national language, not freedom of speech. It might not be against the law for me to spit in the street but it is still rude.
If the so-called gringos in foreign lands are demanding that everything be in English for them then they are wrong also. I don't operate under a double standard.

I have never once heard anyone torment or talk smack about an english-only speaker in Spanish at work... Especially while they are standing there.
That's exactly what I'm talking about, though. You don't know what they are saying, so you assume they are saying something bad about you.

It is your defeatist attitude in your posts that are irritating. Instead of being outraged you imply we should just accept the unacceptable as if there isn't a damned thing we can do about it and that simply isn't true.
Turning a thread about language into a bash Hispanics thread = hatred towards Hispanics.
Ironic, that the people who are offended by Spanish can't seem to master English.
Sorry to burst your little liberal bubble with a pinprick of reality, but any discussion of the use of Spanish in America is inexorably intertwined with the fact of massive illegal immigration. When you have tens of millions of Spanish speakers here illegally that, by necessity, helps to drive the debate.
Maybe you need to stop hanging out the reconquista types, if you seek it you will find it.
Well hell, that makes all the difference in the world.
ATTENTION: this discussion is now over because SF doesn't know anyone attempting to force Spanish speaking upon an ostensibly English speaking country.
Ever met someone who's been here 20 years and never bothered to learn the language?
If so then you have met exactly the kind of people to whom we are referring.
If I move to another country, where English is not the language, you can be damn sure I'm going to learn their language. You can also be damn sure that very few other countries will bend over backwards to accommodate me and my entitlement mentality, as the US does, by kissing my arse and providing me with the tools I need to never have to learn the tongue of the country I may move to.
