Doesn't it seem like, despite the lip service people give to gay marriage/rights now and a general condemnation of racism, this decade is the most backward-looking since the 1950s if not the 1910s?

Some points in case:

1) People call Obama a 'communist' just because basically, he's not a complete fascist like W. Bush and Romney and basically everyone who is called a 'conservative'.

2) An overwhelmingly negative attitude about the younger generation and the future, and an almost Luddite condemnation of technology

3) A very weak peace movement. The military is basically beyond criticism in today's America, and increasingly in Australia, Canada, etc

4) Hateful, almost genocidal feelings towards illegal refugees

5) Hostility from the general public and media towards protests of all kinds

6) An ever-increasing obsession with crime and punishment. The endless CSI and Law and Order franchises, Criminal Minds, a million similar shows, gladiator-like public bloodthirst for Casey Anthony, Jerry Sandusky, etc.

7) Misanthropy and supporting population reduction are 'cool'

8) Old music and old pop culture is more popular than new pop culture, which is part of the reason most new music isn't very good

9) The fact we basically have no interest in exploring space anymore

10) You never hear about saving the rainforest anymore. Because, I guess, it is now a lost cause?

Heck if the GOP had their way they would take us back to the 1890s where urchin children roamed the streets, disease outbreaks were common, people lived in shanties, there was no safety net, and cities were filthy...but at least the rich didn't have to pay any taxes at all and corporations were people.

Those were the days my friend! No civil rights, welfare state, EPA, Clean Water Act, Endangered Species Act, and no daily limits!

Not only that you had the Supreme Court to step in any time one of those pesky states decided to ban yellow dog contracts, limit work hours, or set a minimum wage, because of course all of those things are horribly unconstitutional and the federal government exists to keep states from doing them.

Culture like music, tv and movies were a million times better than now for sure

Today there is a severe lack of talent and creativity especially compared to the 80's but also to the 90's

People just seem to be getting by and act like robots today compared to past decades when people seemed much happier and lived life (pre 2000's)

I think it is safe to say that since we have a major party that seriously wants to take us back to the gilded age, that is relevant to us being less progressive then we were in the 1980s and 1990s.

We've made progress on gay rights issues for sure. Secularism is on the rise.

But abortion rights are increasingly threatened, along with creeping attempts by evangelicals to impose their beliefs on others using government resources. Warmongering, and elite control of government is on the rise. The corporate owned mainstream press is a failure. Right wingers are reducing minority voter participation by increasing ID requirements.

We're in decline as a nation and I don't see things turning around.

Not only that, but the other major party is essentially a puppet that's made to look as a 'sane' alternative to the GOP, when really it's maybe 2% less insane if that.
