These are 'Swift' style boats. They have dual 50-cal belt fed gun turrets both fore and aft, armor protection on the bridge and 40mm grenade launchers. The only thing the DPS needs is to arm their patrol helicopters like their UH-60's & MD-600N's w/ 20mm cannons and to permit fire authority to prevent those boats from coming over to the U.S. side to retrieve the drugs OR leave if they've already arrived.
Bump the armament up to include mini-guns or Vulcans! The M-2 is a great weapon, but the firepower from Gatlings is more intimidating. And ensure the rules of engagement are such that they are free to use them somewhat liberally. A few druggies being turned into finely ground chum should help get the message across.

How about a link on the boat spec's. I thought they had a fiberglass hull. What money paid for them?
How about not starting a war with Mexico just because a bunch of addicted numbskulls must have their fix.
BTW - I was on the PBR's in 'Nam and you do NOT want that duty. Ever!
That's a one sided outlook though as Mexico itself has no reluctance to have it's military "protect" those cartel smugglers who are interdicted and challenged by Border patrol agents as I have personally witnessed when those poor dudes in their Chevy trailblazers of the day were chasing two previously Yuma stolen pick-ups and they turned back across the line near the Imperial sand dunes and there came the Mexcian Army with it's jeep mounted M-60's actually firing warning shots at the Border Patrol still on the American side of the border.
You guys really gotta let the hounds off the leash a couple of times; international incident be damned, and serve notice any interferance by Mexican Military in a provocative manner so as to be seen to be aiding and abetting an international crime will receive a swift and deadly response; full stop.
Shut the hell up Calderone! Feed your people, get them jobs, stop the corruption, stop the smuggling, 'til then just SHUT THE HELL UP!

History has proven that the Mexicans need to be taught a lesson every few decades or their Latino machismo will lead them to start pushing the envelope again and see what they can get away with.
History has also proven that the Mexican government has virtually no control over it's borders, nor over the far northern area (along the US border) or the far southern area (along the Guatemalan & Belizian borders). Every rebellion and serious internal threat to the Mexican government has always started in either Chiapas & Yucatan (south) or Chihuahua & Sonora (north).
U.S. Navy Special Warfare Hot Extract - YouTube
this is how to patrol the U.S. side of the Rio Grande and the SWIC packs some serious fire power and already has the intimadating factor if it is on patrol in the area so it has psycolical advantage kind of like a main battle Tank has on land wen they are in the area.
Also the war of drugs is a lost war but since we seem like we are going to continue fighting it get some Blackhawk and little birds along with drones to watch and provide airsupport..
I don't understand why we don't put a few US Navy patrol boats in the Rio Grande, plus some Cyclone Class offshore patrol vessels in the Caribbean, the Gulf of Mexico, and off SoCal.
Cyclone class offshore patrol vessels have quite a bit of firepower for their size; 25mm cannons, M2 .50 machine guns, 40mm grenade launchers, Stinger SAMs, plus the small arms and light machine guns issued to the crew. I believe they can also carry a small number of SEALs or US Marines.

Not where the confrontations are happening. Different countries and different cartels. That is why.
