We've set another record which is the number of people on SSDI.
8.7 million and SSDI trust fund is running a deficit and they have to borrow from the Treasury to make payouts. Add spouse and child payments and the total is 10.8 million people receiving SSDI checks.

One sick nation, getting sicker each year.
In 1992 it was 1 in 35 getting SSDI
Today it is 1 in 16 getting SSDI

8,733,461: Workers on Federal 'Disability' Exceed Population of New York City | CNSNews.com
A record of 8,733,461 workers took federal disability insurance payments in June 2012, according to the Social Security Administration. That was up from 8,707,185 in May.
..
In fiscal 2009, the Disability Insurance Trust Fund deficit was $8.5 billion. In fiscal 2010, it was $20.8 billion. And in fiscal 2011, it was $25.3 billion.

What did you think would happen when you pay people for 2 yrs to not work? ( unemployment) Hell after 2 yrs I would probably be mentaly incapable of working too.

The joke about welfare being limited to 5 years is becausee they reclassified welfare back in the Clinton years and now only the cash reward called TANF is considered welfare. All the rest -- food stamps, Section 8, Medicaid, SSDI and many more have no limits and have become life choices. They also don't count against family sponsored immigrants as making them public charges. Only TANF counts.

I think there are many people who get disability insurance who are not disabled in any way. There needs to be much more investigation into people who get it. I've seen the occasional video of people on medical disability doing things they shouldn't be able to do.

Then you have those with 'fibromyalgia', a made-up 'disease'. I used to watch 'Hoarders' and so many of those people were on 'disability', it was pretty disgusting.

All it takes is someone being persistant with their doctor and the doc gives the OK.

We need people to monitor these cases, and re-evaluate their need for SSDI.

Exactly. I know a guy who was on the liver transplant list and worked up until the day he got a liver and then was back to work in three weeks. I knew a woman who made arrangements to have her chemotherapy so she could sleep because she was working and she worked unti the day she was admitted into ICU and died.

Then you see these welfare scammers that just plain don't feel like working and it's incredible how many there are.

1 for every 19 working? That is disturbing and pathetic.

And if these people on SSDI are white, they are celebrated as salt-of-the-earth types. When in reality they are usually just lazy folks who've eaten poorly all their lives with little exersize and now they are essentially charity cases.

So Repugs, keep talking about personal responsibility, but not just when it is convenient for you...

How did you determine they were Republican ? Nothing in that article mentioned these people's political affiliation.
