Does the fact that large corporations benefit mean, on the whole, the whole program represents a negative? I think the social answer ("we should help the poorest") and the economic answer (net benefit to society) might differ.
The "social answer" IMHO would be to cut out the middle man and use direct means whenever possible so that the poor get the most bang from the buck. When that $1 leaves your hand it's not $1 that gets to the poor person as each guy takes his cut along the way.
JPMorgan doesn't make much off of each card but they do when the number of cards grow and the number of programs go paperless for them to administer. And that is just JPMorgan. They made $5+ billion in profits just from the food stamp program in 2010. That doesn't include UE or child support or any other government program they administer. That is just food stamps alone and that's 2 years ago.
That would be the poor, impoverished and stumped upon.
No they don't benefit the most. They get money to buy food which is nothing more than immediate gratification and does nothing to help them improve in the long run. If they don't improve themselves then they are dependent on it for life.
Massachusetts Democratic Gov. Deval Patrick has vetoed the state legislature’s attempt to ban the use of EBT cards — or food stamps — to purchase items such as tattoos, porn and jewelry.

If they don't get food stamps, they will suffer from starvation and die. But we always can go back to soupkitchens and breadlines.
what a bad governor he is, and i can't even imagine why a governor would veto people buying jewelry and porn with food stamps.
the best fix for the food stamp program is to have everyone work for their benefits, even if it is just volunteer work at a soup kitchen, animal shelter, etc. it would get rid of the deadbeats and the double and triple dippers, etc, and everyone would be productive.
i bet nobody would then complain about the program---but as it stands now i think it makes working people angry to know that they are working so some people can buy porn with their EBT cards.
So you admit it's a lifelong program for them ? Without food stamps they will starve and die in the streets.
It started off as a temp program to get families through hard times, not a lifestyle program to be on for the rest of your life.
That is generalizing I think. For the most people food stamps are just the means to get through tough economic times. For some it is a lifelong program, though. However they are in the minority.
I don't see how. EBT comes on a card that can only be used for food. Now if you are talking about TANF again its not cash its on the EBT card as well so don't see where you get the idea they are used at those places.
