It's because the criminal element knows there is more likely than not going to be any armed resistance at these venues.

Gun free zones put the law abiding citizen in a vulnerable position... Because criminals don't care about laws or restrictions.

There was a shooting at a movie theater in Brazil during a screening of the movie Fight Club... It happened in 1999.

When was the last time you heard about a shooting at a Police Station? Gun store? Gun show?

Any place people gather is easy pickings (schools, theaters, malls, etc) I have no idea why anyone would want to kill innocent strangers, especially when they aren't part of a movement, war, or revolution of some sort. These mentally ill individuals are wild cards and that's what is so scary.

That's been done. If you look beyond guns to just crazy killers you can find they've been at scout camps, retirement homes, and all sorts of places people are less likely to fight them off. Sick puppies, and cowardly too.

Most schools have armed police (see Virginia Tech).

Of course your theory doesn't explain why someone would wear ballistic armor if they didn't expect someone to return fire, something the police now believe was the reason for his wearing it. Anticipation of an all out shoot out with the police.

But thanks for sharing.
