Unfortunately, just like with any satellite/dish service there may be service interruptions. Plan accordingly.
That's the problem--satellite service is unreliable in bad weather. In northern, midwestern and great plains states, that's a good part of the winter and any time you have a thunderstorm.

I guess you'd need to be connected to know when you lose your job.

Since government job offices are fairly useless to low-skilled workers looking for jobs, and since Craigslist is very useful to these jobseekers, I'd say being connected is quite useful to these workers.

On a good day I can find one local dishwasher job at my government job office and find a dozen jobs on Craigslist...and the CL jobs tend to be filled very quickly, so that dozens of jobs are available on CL for every job available through a government job office.

Also there are a number of ways to make money on Craigslist that are quite impossible through government job offices.

Also, a lot of services - including government services - are now only offered online. Internet access is becoming like electricity or water. A basic utility.

I'm making money online and my goal is to be making enough money by the end of this year to no longer need a job. eBay and other sites (Amazon, Etsy) have created a national (or greater) market for niche items that are difficult to find and to sell locally, and I'm lovin' it.

Which means the government will have to provide both internet access and computers to people.
You cannot provide "online only" access without providing the means of access.

Almost everything is done on the web these days, and it's an administrative nightmare to run one without reliable internet service. Even farmers rely on the web. My rural area in eastern Nebraska just got broadband a few years ago and we're fairly close to Lincoln--west of us is still waiting. Before that we had hit or miss satellite service that went out whenever it rained or snowed (which is a good part of the winter). The feds need to get involved because in rural areas there's no financial incentive for phone companies to run the lines.

Some of you are great at snark, but beyond that you absolutely don't have a clue what you're talking about.
Most small towns even in the middle of nowhere have some form of DSL access, though its usually not the fastest. Today, its only the extreme remote areas that usually have no option beyond 56k dial-up for Internet. Many areas that can't connect with DSL or cable can at least connect with 3G which is about the speed of a slow DSL connection. As for businesses, many of them need dedicated circuits such as T1s and they are available pretty much universally, even if DSL and cable or not. There was a time (about six years ago) when rural broadband availability was a big problem but today its not near the issue as it was as almost anywhere except the most remote areas have some option.

What does the government provide that is only online? I've seen many "services" that they ALSO offer online but I don't know of an mandatory online stuff. I could be wrong but if so the government also provides libraries with computer access.

A basic utility? 40% of all internet traffic is porn. You want the government to pay for others to get their jollies? I guess medicare pays for viagra now so why not right?

My mother lives about 15 miles outside of a small town with neighbors about every half to 1 mile. Getting wired broadband to them would be extremely expensive. Someday it will all be wireless, right now she pays a premium for satellite.

Texas itself is bigger than many European countries and the southwest US is still lightly populated. Not cost effective.
