We’ve all encountered 'em both here and other places online, at meetings, parties and social gatherings, etc… all the right wing extremist "true believers" who feel "entitled" to share their obsessions with Obama (Obummer, Bammy, Chimpy, Thug-in-Chief, the Uppity Communist, Socialist, Kenyan, Muslim, Great Satan with Nazi tendencies, etc.), along with all their paranoia & conspiracy theories (the Birthers, Global Warming deniers, the Home-a-sekchul Agenda, UN Agenda 21, FEMA concentration camps, the War Against Christmas, One World Guvmint, Healthcare Death Panels, etc.).

And almost on a daily basis now, they seem to churn out serious and fundamental lies, historical revisionism & out-of-context distortions (Shirley Sherrod, Sandra Fluke,The Churchill bust conspiracy, Obama Sues To Prevent Military From Voting, You Didn't Build That, Obama caused the Recession, etc.).

Plus having any sort of discussion with these folks is almost impossible, without encountering all the usual rhetorical 'tricks' if not outright dishonesty, like Strawman arguments, Deflection, Reframing the Argument, Moving the Goalposts, and the many Solipsisms ("it must be true, because I think it is!"). And even if you persevere through all those, the "dialogue" still usually ends up in some sort of outright denial, rudeness, and the inevitable name-calling (*******s, Democraps, Obamabot, etc.)

Not that Lib-ruls are innocent by any means, but IMHO, they don’t even remotely compare to the no-holds-barred intensity, willful denial of facts or science, and just the sheer volume and lack of civility or "boundaries" of the Right Wing movement.

So what's driving all this stuff, that increasingly seems to resemble a religious cult more than a political movement? Is it just the conservative version of Bush-hating, or a by-product of the internet-cable tv-talk radio "echo chamber", or even some sort of psychological pathology, or…? And do you think it's getting worse?

BTW, maybe we can even get some interesting ideas going… before the 'usual suspects' show up!

IMO both sides are becoming more extreme. Cable news that only shows one side of the story is one part. Forums like this is another.

The good thing (that is usually forgotten in a place likebthis full of political junkies) is the vast majority of people don't follow either extreme. Cable talk show ratings are miniscule compared to regular shows.

The cause?

Conservatives are winning.

Liberal fanatics are losing... and can only call names in response, like "right wing nuttery".

No, no need to thank me. Happy to help out....!

They believe if they throw crap at the wall often enough sooner or later it will stick, and yes it will get worse.

It's like a mass hysteria. When GW Bush was Pres I didn't disrespect him while he was office. What the people on this site say about Obama daily is criminal IMO.

My explanation:

The ideological purging of the moderates and moderate conservatives from the Republican Party.

Heck, even Reagan wouldn't win in today's Republican Party (the REAL Reagan, not the mythical figure that Tea Partiers worship).

There were ALWAYS right-wing nutjobs, by the way. McCarthyites, Birchers, the supporters of George Wallace's campaign in 1968. They were not, however, the only voices in the Republican Party...until rather recently.

Maybe it's something in the Kool Aid they're drinking...

It all can be traced back to talk radio. As soon as these political entertainers started getting attention, the discourse in politics took a dramatic hateful and slanderous tone. The people on the extremes are far more entertaining than moderates. Unfortunately, people of limited intellect do not recognize the entertainers as such and gobble up their message as if it was spoken from God himself.

There might be something to that. I rarely listen to AM radio these days, and a couple weeks ago was at a friends looking to scan for some local news about a nearby fire. It was incredible... just scanning the AM dial, I counted at least 8 different talk-radio stations, ALL ranting on about Obama, over one thing or another! And it was obvious, they werent just complaining, it was a veritable hate-fest on the guy! Its like this kinda thang has become a veritable cottage industry now for conservatives!

This from the guy that applauded the false, despicable ad tying a woman's death to Romney, as long as people buy into it. You got some nerve
