If I've got a gun and a pit bull comes charging at me, I'm damn well gonna shoot it too.

Default clearly self-defense

Amazing all the concern the people have for the dog but not for the man laying there on the sidewalk.

Society is pretty screwed up!

Sad to see the dog shot but the homeless man did not have control of his pet. The dog was doing what dogs do, protecting his human. Nonetheless, a charging pitbull is a real threat. A homeless man with a dog has likely not been able to get the dog the rabies vaccinations. Shoot the dog or have the LEO facing the attack go through rounds of painful & expensive rabies treatments on the taxpayer dime.

I like seeing threads where the cops are in the wrong, but, I can't see this as one of those. I say the cop did what he should of done.

Sad for the dog but as MO gal stated what about the guy on the ground. The Police couldn't get near him to help because that dog was in attack mode.

The bad decision was on the part of the homeless man to have a dog he couldn't control.

I'm just sorry they didn't shoot it 2 or 3 times to immediately put it out of its misery.

Nobody, and I mean NOBODY loves pitbulls more than me. That dog had to be shot.

Apparently, the "why did you shoot it" screamers are either blind or stupid, possibly both since it's NYC.

Then they would have complained that the cops executed the animal instead of putting it put of its suffering. Most people are frigging idiots expecially hard core city dwellers when it comes to the nature of life.

One of my favorite things when a case of animal abuse is revealed are the folks who point to some instance of callousness towards humans. The logic is that since some people were oblivious to human suffering, we should not be outraged by animal abuse.

I'll vote for the rabies shots. Or, better yet, bring in someone who knows what they are doing around animals.

BTW, how do you think our brethren in more civilized countries like Canada or Great Britain handle such situations?
