It was not for the clothing they were wearing: it was because they are city council members.
It is funny. From my window I can see the city council building, and the parking garage the members have to park at. It is a block away. When the city council breaks up in the evening each member literally has to race that block to get to safety, with outraged citizens chasing them every step of the way.
One city council member, a woman aged 68, is usually caught (not always; sometimes the 340 pound guy gets caught). However, just this morning she voted for more spraying for the west Nile virus, in all areas of town but hers. Even as I type a crowd of Christians (mainly) are gathering to give chase. I have a cat I plan to drop on her head as she races by.
Considering the racism and prejudice exhibited towards Islamists by some people, including officials, in France ... maybe this person deserved a beating.

So what about the hatred Islamists exhibits towards France? The couple was chased by Salafists who are the most radical extremists in the Muslim faith.
Islamic Theocracies and civility (can't even get near freedom and democracy) can not coexist.
