Many make an issue that overweight, out of shape people cost more in terms of health care costs. However, that is a simplistic statement much of the time. The vast majority of health care costs are associated with the elderly. Healthy people live longer, and are more likely to live to a ripe old age, thereby putting a strain on Medicare, not to mention SS. Severely overweight people are far more likely to die young, eliminating that drain on the HC system. Not to mention not live long enough to collect on SS. As such, should SS rates and Medicare rates be reduced in inverse proportion to BMI?

Not to mention that "healthy" people typically participate in activities that put them in danger of needing health care. Face it, you don't see many 300lb chicks riding bicycles in traffic, bungie jumping, mountain climbing or cliff diving.

Interesting thread, nice to see something a little different perspective in here.

I suspect you are greatly underestimating the costs associated with chronic conditions that overweight people are more likely to have over a longer period of time, and the large portion of costs that come in the final year or months of either life will be similar whether overweight person dying at 60 or skinny person dying at 70.
