Why aren't they training themselves? Why is it the government's job to "give" people a skill? I educated myself. If you want that job, get those skills.
Am I missing something? Increased funding to education won't give people those skills anyway. High school doesn't prepare anyone for a manufacturing job.
Exactly. If the company wants skilled workers they can train em.
Clinton spoke about this last night. This is an important piece of the recovery puzzle. Why aren't we training these people? Romney wants more cuts to education? What is wrong with that picture?
Why aren't they taking the classes they need to get those jobs while they are still in school?

Part of the problem is that these jobs do not in most cases require a college degree. We have TOO MANY PEOPLE GOING TO COLLEGE AND EARNING WORTHLESS DEGREES. And of course many of these people are pursuing their dream of living comfortably writing about art history or blogging. All with huge amounts of debt.
Obama is correct, and wrong at the same time, that education is the answer. The wrong education wastes time and money. If 60,000 people had been trained as machinists instead, they would be in jobs earning > $50K per year. But for some reason, some people in power (such as the White House) believe you should be able to go to college, borrow lots of money, get a degree of your choice, and earn your sociology degree. It is not a citizen right to expect society to help you pay for an education that leaves you unable to provide for yourself four years later.
If we didn't produce any more liberal arts graduates (except economics) for ten years, we would not have suffered at all.

Now, I will be reminded of you every time I see a boy holding his school bus and creating a nuisance for the rest of us, just because he doesn't think going to school, or getting educated, is worth his time and effort. I guess, it tells more about one's upbringing than anything else.
Americans have lost jobs to more than just Canadians, Mexicans, and the Chinese. My last two employees were in the US on H1B Visas. Out of 19 applicants for the position, the two that were most qualified were not Americans.
When the campaign was to buy American that was before American vehicles included Japanese components. It was also before education in the US became so bad that companies cannot afford to hire American workers.
Companies can find workers, just not qualified American workers. I do not care what their country of origin may be, if they can be legally hired and they are the most qualified I will give them the job. The rate I pay is based upon the position, not the person being hired.
Hate to admit, but I have to agree with you.
The American system is mass producing spoiled brats that think the world exists to make them feel good.
I can't knock employers for taking H1bers, given the American alternative.
Remember when Obama asked people to at least try college, technical school or similar for a year? Then got ripped and called an elitist?
Maybe there was something to it because there is a huge disconnect right now in what people are learning and the jobs that need to be filled and it's not up to us to pay for it but regardless we are paying for it one way or another (falling home prices, crap economy etc.)

They are also stuck paying those student loans they took out for that year or two.
Less than 50% of those in college (4 year program) actually graduate. Less than 30% of those in college (2 year program) actually graduate.
We have all these dropouts with high loans to pay back and no skills with which to get jobs except a HS diploma.
Take a guess of the demographics of these people that drop out ? Take a guess at which demographic our schools are PUSHING into college even though they are not qualified to go to college.
