I just finished reading his book SSN Strategies for Submarine Warfare. The specific detail of military operations and protocol seems unfathomable for a civilian! This book was a great read but felt like I was reading a Pentagon briefing.

Absolutely. The Hunt for Red October mentions a few things that were classified at the time that he could never have known unless he either worked a position that required Military intel or if someone who did, told him about it.

Most everything he writes about can be found in "Janes book of fighting ships".

Jane's Defence always frustrated us because we would have pictures that were still classified, but Jane's would have the same photo or info in their latest edition. Having said that - The Hunt for Red October had stuff that Jane's deals nothing with.

If he published things that were classified at the time shouldn't he have been arrested?

That is exactly what most of us thought when we read the book and discussed it at work! I have no answer for you other than that he was never arrested! Of course, he never signed a Non-Disclosure Agreement either . . . A JAG officer is needed to weigh into this one!!

I liked Clancy books, when he actually wrote them. Most if not all of his current books are penned by someone else but Clancy does get some credits for them. He has had inside information during GOP administrations and he hires retired military to provide some details.

The guy also has a pretty high opinion of himself. Saw him on a Charlie Rose interview a couple of years back. That was a bit of a turnoff.

Well, you haven't boosted my faith in national security too much with that.
