Wait, so now you do want a government sponsored monopoly?
It sounds like you have never had a choice in your utilities.
I lived outside of Austin. I had my choice of TXU, Reliant or a number of other providers yet there is only one set of power lines going down the road.
By not having a choice you are dealing with a monopoly. The people who live in Austin within the city limits have no choice..they only have Austin Energy.

Your statement makes no sense. He is saying the physical infrastructure or conduit doesn't matter.
Also just so you know the govt owns it all anyway. They own controlling stock in most if not all publicly traded companies.
This is the CA hearings. Notice the corporate BS. Luckily, the reps call them on their BS. Seriously this hearing is bizarre. Gotta watch it. The PG&E rep won't even tell them who they can talk with. No names of any kind.
Great stuff CD, and freaking unbelievable to hear her trying to argue about 'safety' while cutting off electricity to families.
I am so glad I started researching on the net as soon as I heard about these meters. I found the 800 number for the delay list and put us on it. I also received calls from PGE about being on the list, AFTER we were on the list, not sure what the purpose of that was. What they do is install these things during the day when people are not home and completely unaware. Rather than making the public seek out the info, they should be asking permission of the homeowners, but that's not what they are doing. I believe CA has it, so that if a home or business is sold, it gets a SmartMeter.
There is a lawsuit in Sacramento, until a ruling, our only option is to be on this delay list.
Not if you own the house no. They had to get me to sign something. That doesn't say that EC's won't eventually force this on people though. Like the other poster said too, they give you incentives to sign up for it. They gave me 50 bucks to try it for at least one season. They also said I could opt out anytime I wanted, but when I tried to get it removed to do some troubleshooting on my AC unit, they came up with every excuse in the book why they couldn't get someone out to remove it and made it such a process to do so, I just removed it myself.
I'm shocked they let you get away with this. Did you have an analog? Did you have an electrician? Have they contacted you? What state do you live in?

Oh, the government owns a controlling interest in all listed companies? Wow!
...I know what he said, he said if the government stopped dolling out public utility monopolies, things would be cheaper - however, it's those public utility monopolies that allow the government to force a company to share its infrastructure with its competitors!

It sounds like you ignored the part of my post you quoted from where I said explicitly that I have a choice...
Haven't you ever changed a thermostat yourself ? Quite easy.
I thought he was talking about the meter. No, I don't do that stuff, that's what husbands are for.
