Default Another Obama Record!… One in Sixteen on Disability Today

A record one in sixteen Americans are collecting federal disability insurance payments today.

Another Obama record.

Barack Obama put 3.1 million Americans on disability from June 2009 (when the recession ended) to July 2012. Obama only created 2.6 million jobs in the same period. (IBD)

CNS News reported:
The Social Security Administration has released new data revealing that 8,786,049 American workers are collecting federal disability insurance payments in September. That sets yet another record for the number of Americans on disability.

The 8,786,049 workers taking federal disability in September is a net increase of 18,108 from the 8,767,941 workers who took federal disability in August.

Over the past 45 years, the number of American workers taking federal disability payments has increased four-fold relative to the number actually working.

In August 1967, 74,767,000 Americans were working (according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics) and 1,152,861 were taking federal disability insurance (according to the Social Security Administration). That means that at that time there were about 65 Americans working for each worker collecting disability.

In August 2012, 142,101,000 Americans were working and 8,767,941 were on disability–meaning there were only 16.2 people working for each person collecting disability.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), a record 88,921,000 Americans were “not in the labor force” in August. These were Americans who were at least 16 years old, who were not in the military or in an institution such as a prison or a nursing home, and who did not have a job and had not actively sought one in the last four weeks.
This means:

In August alone–

** 119,000 fewer Americans were employed in August than in July.
** 368,000 people simply dropped out of the labor force in August.
** And, 18,108 people started collecting disability.

Being aware and disheartened by the state of world is now considered a disability. If you can still function in a cloud of lies and corruption is acceptable to you...You are considered able.

Disability for some is just getting pensioned off early. I would assume that half of those who get this high level welfare pay out..are those who just don't want to play in the stinking system any more. I see this in Canada. People who suffer burn out who are even more burned out after being on welfare...apply for a disability. If it is a physical condition you had better be missing a leg or two...If it is a supposed mental condition..You had better ask for every drug available and be ingesting pills like candy...and you will get disability..

Here is the difference..Welfare clients who have a dental problem will have their teeth ripped out and be disfigured...the state will pay for that..With Disability..they will repair your teeth...In socialist Canada...profiteers become rich by providing services for the "disabled"...I know a woman on disability.. She has a foot problem...The state will pay for very expensive orthopedic inserts but she will have to stick them into 20 dollar shoes...The inserts cost 700 dollars...someone is making money on them- it's a system- all of our doctors are just like American doctors...all are millionaires.

I just want to know who in the h*ll taught you how to do basic math? Sixteen percent IS NOT one in sixteen people--it's sixteen people out of every hundred. My boys could have answered that problem correctly in around the 4th grade.

Not only that, but none of your numbers add up even beyond your bad math. The United states has 314 million people, and your data shows that close to 9 M of them are on disability. That's not 16%--it's 2.86% of the population. I'm still home, sicker than a dog with the flu and even I could figure this one out. Good grief.

Ya know, figures are funny things and even funnier still when they're presented in the form of percentages.

So...let's look at the raw data. Let's look at how many people have been awarded SS disability benefits, how many dropped from the rolls and what the net increase was. Let's do that for the first 3 years of the Obama administration (2012 data is still incomplete) and the last 3 years of the Bush administration. Let's just see how "bad" Obama has been about putting people on disability rather than giving them a job. '

Before we do that, though, it must be remembered that NEITHER PRESIDENT had any control over how many claims were filed or how many were awarded. The criteria for determining eligibility is set by Congress and the Social Security Administration has little latitude in that regard. IF a person qualifies under the standard set by Congress, the SS administration MUST award payments. Blaming or crediting a President, ANY President, with changes in the figures is nothing more than an exercise in political dishonesty and humbuggery.

However, that's what we're doing here, so let's see those figures:

During the last 3 years of the Bush administration, a total of 2,530,713 people were awarded SS disability payments. During that same time period, 1,602,822 people went off disability for whatever reason. That left a net increase of 927,891.

During the first 3 years of the Obama administration, a total of 3,063,494 people were awarded SS disability. During that same time period, 1,931,767 went off disability for whatever reasons. That left a net increase of 1,131,727, or just over 100,000 more than during the Bush years.

Since disability awards have been steadily rising for years, and our population has been rising too, that 100,000 difference is statistically insignificant. Moreover, it should be noted that 2011 showed the largest percentage DROP in awards since 1997. (The single largest percentage of INCREASE since 1997 was in 2001.)

You may ask, "Just where in the heck are you getting those figures, Stillkit?"

From the Social Security Administration:

Disabled-worker statistics

I have a different point entirely. Based upon the thread title, Obama is directly responsible for it increase in disability. If so, what has Obama done, or not done, that resulted in this number of disabilities?what is

What is particularly misleading about that chart is that the red line, disabilities, are cumulative, while the number of jobs is not cumulative. This gives the impression that disabilities arising faster than increases in jobs. I don't believe that is substantiated by the data.

What is probably the case, is that disabilities are up generally in proportion to the number of new jobs.

What happens in hard economic times is that applications for disability markedly increase. This also happens in the months leading up to businesses closing.

Obama has provided the nation with hard economic times, such that people who could probably otherwise work (we see them in our office all the time) are now on the government dole due to disability.

Obama is turning the US into a third world state, one bit at a time.
