Americans, in general, are just wasteful. They want huge stoves with 8 burners for their family of three, they need two living rooms for the 'entertaining' they do twice a year and instead of being clever and inventive with storage and facilities, they just make their house bigger instead. There are a few blogs out there for people who decorate and organize very small apartments and houses and it's just amazing how inventive these people are.

If you want a giant monstrosity of a house, go for it. I prefer smaller living.

The two funniest things in modern large home design: the little living room that is literally never used because everyone uses the great room or family room/ and the huge master suite bedrooms. I don't know anyone who spends enough time in their bedrooms to need all that space. (A ridiculous number of bathrooms also ranks high on the list of stupid things---unless you have a bunch of teenagers.)

Yeah like 5 bathrooms, what do you have 10 kids? It's crazy to me.

We had two bathrooms growing up for a family of 5 and it was never an issue. My Mom, sister and I always did our hair/makeup in our own bedrooms and never hogged the bathroom. I never understood the argument of 'needing time to get ready'. Isn't that what bedrooms are for? I actually spent a lot of time in my bedroom growing up, but never needed a lot of room. I had a desk, bed and vanity and my 10x10 room was perfectly fine for that.

I've seen some master suites that were bigger than my first apartment! Why would you need an entire living room in your bedroom?

In Hong Kong there are people literally living in cages, like birds, just long enough for a bed.

As a conservative who is in support of capitalism, you should be in support of this development.

This is happening because San Francisco, already an expensive city, is being priced even further out of reach for most mortals by a tech boom. That's good, right? That's business stepping in and doing what it does, entrepreneurs who are reaping the rewards of their market victories and becoming rich, and all that good stuff. It's conspicuous wealth at its best! This stuff is Mitt Romney's old bread and butter - who do you think Bain VC was investing in?

So those who do not have enough to be millionaires and billionaires can live in tiny storage units. That's as it should be, right? The rich get the penthouses, the others get whatever they can get their hands on. That's what the market is serving up over here right now, so that's what will be on the table. Don't hate the player; hate the game.

Of course not. Bubba loves his double wide and he might not know why but he knows he hates those people in the big city because the fat man yelling out of the radio tells him to.

I knew a guy who lived in a tiny shack/mobil not much larger then we're talking (maybe like 250 or 300 sq ft) right next to the beach in Gaviota near Santa Barbara. The owner let him stay for free if he chased off tresspassers (mostly surfers looking for a short cut to the beach) and just plain looked after the lot. He loved it but then again he had a gorgeous view of the ocean and and the islands just by sitting outside his front door.

I've always lived in small homes. The one I have now is the biggest (still under 1600 sq ft), it's where we raised the kids, and is also the first time I've had 2 bathrooms. I'd downsize today except it's actually cheaper for me to keep living here than move to a smaller place since I bought it 21 years ago when the prices were low. Maybe someday though..

Another thought on those gourmet kitchens...even people who don't cook want them.
