"The new laws include purges of people suspected of not being citizens in 16 states that unfairly target Latinos, the civil rights group Advancement Project said in the study to be formally released on Monday. Laws in effect in one state and pending in two others require proof of citizenship for voter registration. That imposes onerous and sometimes expensive documentation requirements on voters, especially targeting naturalized American citizens, many of whom are Latino, the liberal group said.
Nine states have passed restrictive photo identification laws that impose costs in time and money for millions of Latinos who are citizens but do not yet have the required identification, it said."

If they are too stupid or lazy to get an ID or prove they are citizens then they are disenfranchising themselves. Also how can the article say they are citizens to begin with and eligible to vote if they don't have proof? LOL

Here is the steps PA has taken with their voter ID law that was passed in March a full 8 months before the election.

  • ID's were requested during the primary but not required to vote.
  • There has been a huge amount of media coverage.
  • There is ongoing PR campaign.
  • A letter was sent to every registered voter that doesn't have a corresponding PA ID.
  • There is extensive list of valid phot ID, including any government issued ID from the federal to local level, long term care faciltiy ID (aka old folks home), student ID from college or university and some others.
  • If you don't have any of these ID's one will be issued for free and there is a special voting only ID available that doesn't require the extensive documentation that may be unattainable like a birth certificate.
  • They even have made accommodations for the indigent (homeless).
  • If you do not have ID on election day you may vote with a provisional ballot but will have to start the process and obtain an affirmation for a valid ID.
If you feel these measures have not gone far enough what is it exactly that you would suggest?

Most of the country agrees that you should have to prove who you are when voting. How come I never hear about movie theaters, liquor stores, and other places "disenfranchising" people by asking for ID?

I swear, it is nothing but common sense to require a valid ID to vote. And why always the concern with hispanics or blacks? Are there not poor white people who don't have ID's? Are you liberals being racist by leaving out the white people in this?

I have had to show photo ID since coming of age to vote in the early 1980s. It protects my vote from fraud.

One routinely has to show photo ID at retail stores when purchasing with a credit card.

One had to prove they were legally entitled to vote when originally signing up for a voter registration card.

There is nothing new in the regs. Perhaps we are finally enforcing safeguards which some states never had due to fraud.

OK, let's see the provisions in the laws that say Hispanics must do more than any other citizen to register to vote. First of all, let's hear what the definition of Hispanic is! Can you please tell us that first? Is there something about Hispanics that prevents them from being photographed for example? Or is there something about being Hispanic that prevents them from driving to someplace to pick up the registration? Are Hispanics prevented somehow from obtaining a birth certificate? Are immigrant Hispanics somehow prevented from obtaining ID in a way that an Chinese immigrant is not? Just what are the facts?

There is something wrong with all of the pandering to a group that will have very little impact overall on this election cycle.

Is there any jurisdiction requiring a photo ID, where they are not available from the govt for free?

Of course you have to show proof of citizenship in order to elect to vote in this country! I can't even believe we are debating this.
