Let me understand this since I've been out awhile.

Man Believed to be Behind Attack That Killed U.S. Ambassador Was Ex-Guantanamo Inmate Released to Libya by the U.S.

Sufyan Ben Qumu is said to have formerly been Osama bin Laden's driver. He was let out of the U.S. military detention center at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, in 2007, when he was turned over to the government of Muammar Gaddafi on the condition that he remain behind bars. While in U.S. custody, Qumu, 53, was characterized as "medium to high" risk to national security, and he refused to cooperate with authorities and explain his past associations with Islamic extremists.

It is now believed that he led the September 11th attack on the U.S. consulate, in which John Christopher Stevens became the first U.S. ambassador killed by overseas violence since 1979.

So the intelligent response would be to let out 55 more detainees??

Current Guantanamo Bay Detainee-Petitioners Approved For Transfer (Sept. 21, 2012)*

Obama to Release One Third of Gitmo Inmates

The large percentage of those scheduled to be released are Yemeni, according to a list made public by the Obama administration.

Obama stopped the release or transfer of Yemeni inmates in 2010, because the conditions in the country were viewed as too "unsettled" at the time.

A release or transfer of 55 inmates means Obama is moving out one third of the prisoners at Guantanamo. And while it doesn't represent a shutdown of the facility, it's certainly indicative of a move toward that end.

Oh - I see - he could not close down the facility via Congress - so he is just letting them go - especially since things are more settled now.

Why should anyone believe this guy is for America?

Lets see how many are traced back to some act of terrorism. Seems to be a reoccurring problem.

Maybe he believes that they will be easier drone targets outside of gitmo.

What is your solution for gitmo? Keep it going forever? Allowing those people to be tried in US courts? Housing them in a prison near you? What do you think ought to be done?

What is our president's solution? I do recall he promised to shut it down.

Fact is many have returned to terrorism. The supposed #2 AQ guy just killed a couple weeks ago was also released from gitmo. Apparently Hillary must need more fighters for her jihad in Syria.

So your solution is to leave it open forever?

If they are supposed to have a trial - try them - the guilty ones meet the virgins. The innocent can go to their homeland.

More food for thought...

34 'high risk' Guantanamo detainees approved for transfer

Before the task force was authorized in January 2009, Joint Task Force Guantanamo (JTF-GTMO) had previously assessed all of the detainees held in Cuba. JTF-GTMO's threat assessments for 760 current and former detainees have been leaked online. (Approximately 167 detainees remain in custody at this time.)

The Long War Journal has matched those threat assessments to the 55 detainees on the task force's list.

JTF-GTMO determined that 34 of the 55 detainees on the newly-released list were "high risk(s)" who are "likely to pose a threat to the US, its interests, and allies" if freed from custody. One detainee was deemed a "medium to high risk."

JTF-GTMO assessed that 19 of the 55 detainees are "medium risk(s)" who "may pose a threat to the US, its interests, and allies."

Just one of the 55 detainees was assessed to be a "low risk, due to his medical condition."
...

Of the 55 detainees on the list, 24 are Yemeni. The Obama administration suspended transfers to Yemen after the attempted Christmas Day 2009 attack on a Detroit-bound airliner. That plot was traced back to al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP), a terrorist organization that is staffed by a significant number of ex-Gitmo detainees.

Note - This task force mentioned is different from the Obama review task force.

You can't fight the War on Terror if you have all the terrorists locked up now can you ?

Yes, that is what should happen. Many of these men have had release dates for years, but they still remain. A number of those that should be returned to Yemen aren't allowed to go home. Obama won't release any from Yemen. It's a crime to house people indefinitely without cause, without charge, without evidence, without hope.
There are a couple that would be tortured or killed if sent back to China, but they should be given refuge somewhere.
Some have fully cooperated with their captures, exhausing all potential for intel, yet they get nothing in return. That sends a message that it does no good to cooperate.
