I would go with a 2013 VW Beetle TDI (diesel) for $24K.
Gets 40mpg hwy and 32mpg city.
I'd go with the 92 Buick Regal I picked up for a few years back for $3K. 28K miles, fully loaded, all kinds of power and in ten years I'll spend 10K less than you.
Can only drive it 25 miles and need a charge.. now where can I plug in my car ? Wonder why Obama doesn't have a bunch of chevy volts in his motorcade .. it is called practice what you preach.
Personally I need an SUV, but a friend of mine has a Volt and he buys 2 gallons of gas per month. That saves him about $350 per month compared to what he used to spend in gas.

Ok but do you have a source for non-ethanol fuel ? That worries me.
I've lost 2 pieces of 2-cycle engine lawn equipment to that crap that shot the carb.
Learned a lesson though..Sta-bil is my friend.

That's offset by a few things, what's the resale value going to be on one of these 8 years down the road? Scrap metal prices? also keep in mind they aren't paying a lot in fuel taxes either which is yet another hidden subsidy.

That's very cool for your friend. I think what most nay-Sayers forget it that no one thinks electric cars will replace ALL vehicles but if even 1/3 of our transportation needs can be met with them that cuts down a lot of our foriegn oil dependence. We should be investing in all forms of alternate energy.

In eight years he will have saved $33 600 in fuel, and I am sure the car will be worth more than scrap metal value.

Right, I think such cars will work for some people, but not for everyone, but even if 20-30% used those kinds of cars, it would make a huge difference.

They would work for me, being a senior citizen who doesn't roam far from home. This is the first year in my adult life when I didn't drive a 4 wheel drive and when I bought my little car in April I did consider the Volt...just thought the technology was a little too new for me at this point in time when reliability is high on my list of 'must haves'.
