In the USA the military wins wars, and politicians lose them.

And in wars based on nothing to win the MIC gains and the people/country lose, Vietnam being a perfect example.

Funny some of us beleive the gvmt should be run like a buss, others disagree. Well all bus decisions are based on risk vs reward.

Using that logic we would never had gone into iwreck.

What was has the US won in the past 6.5 decades?

Another ridiculous thread.

The premis of the OP is correct. Civilians send our military to war often with impossible goals.
For example Win hearts and minds. How do you do this after bombing someone into the stoneage?
War should be the last resort because it is so very terrible.
Why did we send our Military into Somalia? How did Somalia threatening our national security?
Over and over we repeat these mistakes. I have asked many times and never gotten an answer. Why do we need 11 carrier battle groups? No one else needs even 4. Why do we foot the lion share of the bill for NATO? The cold war is over. Many NATO countries have taken huge advantage of this by maintaining a small military. Why build up when you have the USA willing to do it for you?
The civilian masters impose impossible rules of engagement and wonder why things fail and US soldiers are killed.
We need to borrow a page from China's play book and mind our own business.

Well said. Nothing to win, is exactly right.

tinman, are you looking for a military overthrow of the government?
All of your posts are the same.

Elected officials run the government.
Period.

If the military doesn't like it, they can just choose not to enlist or re-enlist.

I agree with your last sentence, but you can't possibly think that stars don't want wars.

Exactly! So; once you figure out which entity was responsible, what do you propose to do to change the, over 65 year, trend?

No I dont want an over throw. What I want is responsible leadership.
If we decide to go to war, then go to win. To win a war you must break the enemies resolve to fight, to want to challenge. That means means you crush the enemy. That is why war should be the last resort.
I never met a star that liked war or wanted a war. I have met quite a few actually. What I do know is that they believe as I do. If you must go to war then you give your men the ability to win and survive. Dont tie their hands.
Why did we go to Somalia?
Croatia?
Iraq?
Afghanistan?
The military isnt given a choice so we cant blame them. We must blame those who send them.
Why did our planes fly sorties over Libya?
Which of the countries mentioned threatened our National security enough to warrent war?
If it is attacks on civilians then we should be down in mexico given how many US civilians are killed my Mexican nationals each year.
You say the same thing everytime if the Military doesnt like it they can opt out and not re-enlist. That is true just as it is true about any job. Unfortunately as with any employer there must be a measure of faith. Faith that you will be used as promised. In this case in defense of our nation.
