One of the first steps that dictators take is to eliminate the intelligentsia. The reason is obvious: Intellectuals will ask difficult questions that said dictators don't want to have to answer. It's much easier just wiping them out or sending them to a work camp.

Would you say that modern political parties are anti-intellectual? If so, why?

Isn't this a concerning trend?

Many intellectuals actually paved the way for the Communist revolution only to be killed off once they took power.

Sure, intellectuals are often at the heart of social change.

Growing up I would have said the Democrats were the anti intellectuals.

Now I'd easily state the Republicans are...William F. Buckley is dead...and I've heard leading media voices on the right condemn intellectuals (I think it was Sean Hannity).

Anyone who worships ideology at the expense of critical thinking and learning...is an anti intellectual.

You would have to qualify "usually". Again, the question has to be asked why those intellectuals are eliminated once the changes were made? I would surmise the reason is that, once the changes occurred, they would start asking uncomfortable questions (and they did, in the case of the Soviet Union, for example).

In any case, that doesn't answer my basic questions: Are modern parties anti-intellectual? If so, why?

Do you equate communism as nothing more than social change? If you deem yourself an intellectual, aren't you more concerned about said "social change" with communism's history of imprisoning intellectuals first?

Jews helped bring Hitler to power and look what happened to them.
