'This election is, as I said, shaping up as a referendum on our social insurance system, and it looks as if Mr. Obama will emerge with a clear mandate for preserving and extending that system.'

Krugman 2016.

So great to read intelligent writing as opposed to all the right-wing sewage that's out there.

Krugman's argument to fund all of this is more and more and more and more and more debt. Yes, brilliant.

I would not call this article brilliant it is just classic Krugman, lets keep borrowing since interest rates are low and have the FR implement QE as far as the eye can see. He never addresses that social security is running in the red nor that it is be funded with less money. What is his solutions besides more borrowing and spending? it could n't be raising taxes on the rich that only brings in 83 billion?

What is funny is that Krugman is all aghast that the Simpson/Bowles commission suggested raising the retirement age on SS. From his tone he considers this harsh austerity but never mentions what his visions and reforms are for the future. I think the main reason Krugman does not like Simpson/Bowles is there is cuts and tax reform.

First, despite years of dire warnings from people like, well, Alan Simpson and Erskine Bowles, we are not facing any kind of fiscal crisis.
He lost me right there. And you call this "intelligent writing"?

Actually the Washington Post article is more neutral and less biased than Krugman's.
Both Obama supporters and the GOP camp have valid points, but ideologists Krugman style, tend to stretch things too far. A referendum for the New Deal? Really...
