Don Knotts, of course, played Barney Fife, a goofball deputy officer on The Andy Griffith Show. His role on this show, the article claimed, is what caused protesters to demand the statue’s removal.

According to the article, “Barney Fife was a nervous, twitchy little man with an itchy trigger finger. He was dirty, always sniffling, and always looking to shoot someone with his one bullet. I bet he was racist too, if there were ever any black people on the show we would have known (whether he was or not).

It’s a joke, read to the bottom of the article.

I wondered if that was satire...so many things being removed, it's hard to be sure anymore.

It might be a joke, but a lot of the snowflakes and point-and-grunts will take it seriously -- just as a lot of the sentimentalists at this site come looking for "Mayberry towns".

There once was a cop named Fife.
He carried a gun and a knife.
The knife was rusty
The gun was dusty
He never caught a crook in his life.

Honestly, I always liked the old shows from 1960-64 with Barney. The newer shows in color were boring, with the character 'Warren" coming on the show.
