Till I came to this country, I had never even heard of a thing called ADHD. First I heard of it, I thought it was a joke, and then I was like WTF. Back home, we had an instant cure for what you call ADHD here - spanking.
Please, please, if you do nothing else when witnessing a child whose parents are tempted to resort to the drug regimen; be pro-active and discuss with those parents the possible results and effects of long term drug usage to control behaviour.
We are childless and back in the late seventies and early eighties the neighbours who lived beside us had a hyperactive prepubescent boy and they had resorted to sending him to school with a vial of ritalin/ridlin for the teachers to administer as needed ~ THEY DESTRoYED THAT KID!
Prior to his being administered this drug my wife found that after school when he arrived home to an empty house she would call him over and suggest he move our wood pile from A to B, next day B to A, another day help cook the evening meal before his parents arrived home. Next day crawl with me under the car I was building to watch as I installed an exhaust system.
We knew nothing of raising a child but we readily recognized this kid needed to be kept occupied with something that challenged his abilities and stamina. His parents were both working and would arrive home to enquire of his older teen-age sister: "where's Robbie"? Her answer was always "next door with the -------'s" and that was the last interest shown by them until he'd be sent home after eating with us to do his homework.
Their typical evening was wife arrive home to perhaps put on a load of washing and chat with daughter; husband arrive later after a longer commute with a bag of family Kentucky Fried and cokes or pepsi's. So after a day of getting dosed up with ritalin/ridlin he'd come home to a carbohydrate crap meal followed with a sucrose laden drink. Absolutely stupid people who in my estimation had no business having children!
This young fellow observably became less and less active and responsive to outside stimuli until I had to insist they seek the input and advice from a specialist. His diagnosis; too late; the years of overdosing him on this "methylphenidate" drug has ruined his development potential!
His mother subsequently died an early death of cancer and his father abandoned both kids to relatives who were even more uninterested than they.
Cripes; I am sitting here tearing up with these memories of a bright young kid who grinned from ear to ear when you praised him for doing a great job of stacking that firewood.
Kids deserve your undevided attention from the busywork of making a daily living. They didn't ask to be born but they deserve your consideration above all else.
Sorry for this rant; but all too often the attention deficit disorder is not with the CHILD but rather with the lazy, too tired after a day of work, too involved in the football game STUPID PARENT!
My son has asbergers and adhd. No drugs. We have him taking a verious amount of certain vitamins and such instead. Same results without the bad side effects. If he misses a day he is a different kid than when he is on his vitamins. Its all about misfiring in the brain and what nutriants are missing and add those and it makes for a different kid. You can do it without the drugs.

ADHD is an excuse for useless parents.
This is America where spanking is considered cruel and unusual punishment almost on par with 1st degree murder.... Don't you know that spanking causes permanent psychological damage to a child and teaches them that parents are <OMG> bullies......
The only worse action that a parent can take against their children is to take their Smartphone away...
My 10 year old has ADHD and ODD, he is on a perscription, 1 pill when he is getting ready for school and 2 before he goes to bed. It is a low dose and non addictive and he is not zombified. Generally I do not like giving my children meds to calm them down but we had no choice with him.

There are kids out there that truly need medication. But it's gone overboard with prescriptions these days.
I certainly do not want to see children dosed with medications they do not need, but I don't think it's fair to paint every parent with a child who takes Ritalin or another medication as lazy.
ADD/HD is a complicated condition that takes its toll on all members of a family. It often occurs alongside learning disabilities that are hard to address when a child is struggling to concentrate. I spend three to four hours a night -- yes, a night -- tutoring my youngest, who has tremendous difficulties with his schoolwork, and I unapologetically give him a low dose of Concerta every day. It makes all the difference for him.
It's not as simple as having a child move a wood pile from point A to point B to burn off excess energy. I truly wish it was.
