Who knows. Kids who used to be bullied when I was young did a variety of things and some were not good. From drugs and alcohol, to being bullies themselves when they got the chance, to just being miserable human beings. I'm not sure suicide wasn't a problem, but there is no way to know that. I do know kids who died from destructive behavior but have no way to know if it was caused by anything specific or if it was suicide (or cry for help) or not. One thing they could do was escape it when they moved or went to another place. I was bullied for a year in middle school, just a girl who wanted to beat me up for whatever reason and who would taunt me with threats and whatnot. Nothing ever happened but I hated school and was glad she wasn't there the following year.

I'd say the thing that's really different today is the fact that you can't always go away and start over. As in this girls case things are online, physical location doesn't matter and wherever you go there it is. Blackmail. Stalking. Physical violence. And from a large group of people who seemingly have no grudge with her but were just amused by the whole thing. It became the thing to do. And apparently wherever she went they followed her? That's just some strange behavior right there and that's what makes this different from any experience I've ever had.

My daughter the target of gossip and shunning for a couple years in high school. She was hurt but was also pissed off and it strengthened her resolve because she can be stubborn and, yes, even bitchy. I can see both good and bad coming from it but at the time it was hard to watch as a parent.

We as a technological collective are becoming like insects in a hive...who send off scents and signals through digital interaction...It is not real human communication. It is more like a group of disembodied prisoners in a dark void...who yell back and forth - cold insults - mindless impersonal "I love you"...Like drunks who treat strangers like family and family like mere friends.

From my own point of view - having taken formal typing in school as a kid- I type by touch-- the communication here is through the fingers...In my case my fingers are different than verbal face to face communion...I can be bold- cruel - lack empathy because there are no consequences. In my years on the computer I have offended thousands of people...When I opened up my first E-mail account- it was a novelty..I used to get dozens of letters from friends and friends of friends...years latter- Not one single person writes to me...I pissed every last person off- It was easy abuse those that I did not really know- They had all through digital communication become de-humanized...

This story about the silly now dead girl, took place because she was just a picture on a screen- that she was just the face of a machine- Harming her was as easy as tossing a rock at an old style TV screen...It was the destruction of a thing- not a human being...This is the danger...when we blend machine with man...we lose our real humanity.

I was bullied at school and beaten at home until I was big enough to do something about it. At school I put a couple of tormenters in the hospital with very serious injuries and at home I told my drunken step father that I would kill him if he tried to hit me again. The result of all the bullying and beating was a kid that was "the meanest sob in the valley". That served me well in 'nam. It was worse than useless for the last 50 years or so.

I feel really bad for this unfortunate child. Some personalities just need to be protected from the bullies. Too bad she did not know where to get help. Or there was no one around willing to help.

Unlike you I really don't care what the Internet world thinks of me and I've taught my children the exact same mentality....

This is cyber-land, don't post any personal details, TrustNo1....

I can live without email, Facebook, Youtube and the Internet, so can my kids and I'm sure their kids.....

Lotta good they did this girl huh?

So you think we are going to have:

~ The Internet Bully Administration?
~ Internet Bully Therapy Hospitals?
~ Facebook Bully Police?
~ The Internet Hurt Feelings Quick Reaction Squad?
~ The Tweet Don't Hurt Me Agency?

What do you suggest the prison terms be?

~ 5 years for making fun of someone on the Internet?
~ 10 years for sending a demeaning email?
~ Life without parole for making someone cry on the Internet?

Will there be a new TV show?

Not sufficient punishment for remote bullying. I suggest 5 weeks in a sensory deprivation chamber for starters.

I would think the man that originally was stalking her was in violation of kiddie porn. He should be sought out and prosecuted as should anyone else posting her photos.

As to the kids posting such hateful materials, all the parents should be notified of their kids exploits and they shoul;d be cut off from facebook and cell phones.... if they can't use them respectfully they need not use them at all.

You think there's a parent out there willing to work that hard at parenting? I hold very little hope for that.
