I live outside of Detroit and 55k I would be extremely happy. The best money I ever made in Michigan was 60k a year. Jobs that use to pay 45k a year pay about $12 a hour now(Im sure republicans are happy to hear that). And people wonder why more people need food stamps to support themselves?
I don't think $55 is bad in DC even if you have a child. If you don't spend beyond your means, I don't see why you wouldn't have disposable money left.
Like most people stated, it depends on where you live. You can use city-data to compare the cost of living index for most cities and areas. I think that if you were living alone and you did not have any very expensive habits or hobbies you should be okay on 55 most places. When I made around 60 I lived in the NYC metro area, which is very expensive. But I never had any financial problems. I have some student loans that I paid, I had a car and paid car insurance, my rent was expensive, but at the end of the day I could still afford to buy some small luxury things, save money, and go out to the city with my friends from time to time.
with no deductions, 55k in the 25% federal income tax bracket means:
$41,250/yr (or $3,437.50/mo or $793.27/wk)
I think a single person should be able to make this work with no legitimate reason to whine about it.
