Why do liberals love Sweden so much? Why do they want America to model itself after it?
I understand Sweden has a rather small population and different demographics so what works in Sweden may not work in the US. Can a nation of 9 million people be a model for one of 300 million?
I am not sure. I have lived in Sweden, and the place is damned impressive. Clean, well-run, people are smart, informed, healthy, and good looking, the environment is clean and beautiful. Norway is just as good, and even more scenic. I would rather live there.
I think the greatness of Sweden has to do with the old Protestant work ethic (though most Swedes are now agnostic), high average intelligence, and an ability to see the big picture and create a society where public welfare and environmental conditions are considered along with economic growth.
I don't find the Swedes all that much fun though. A rather serious and introverted lot. For conversation, I much prefer the Irish, who are a lot like us. Loud, fun, and more prone to shenanigans. They are also opinionated and often loud and ignorant, just like us. And they don't have the Scandinavian gift for organization. Again, maybe Norway is intermediate, with Scandinavian order and a bit of Celtic flair.
We could learn a great deal from the Scandinavians, but I like the USA better. It is still the greatest country on Earth. But Sweden, Canada, and Norway would be close contenders.
First time I went to Stockholm, I was impressed. Very beautiful city, very clean and safe. Even downtown Stockholm, no one locks their bicycles, very civilized overall.
Only bad thing about Sweden is that everything is so expensive- I remember eating at a Burger King in Stockholm and a combo cost something like 90 Swedish crowns- about 3 times more what it would cost here in the USA
There is a fast food chain in Sweden called Max, they make some of the best burgers I have ever had- I would love to go back sometime- one of my favorite countries in the world.
Liberals always talk about how great Sweden is, and how America should be more like Sweden. Do you believe Sweden is the greatest nation on earth?
One word: Ikea.
The Japanese are synonymous with automobile quality. The French and English created cellular technology, and calculus some time ago. The Asians and Central Americans dominate manufacturing. The Swedes dominate home organization, and that's engineering.
We have many others whom we can emulate, and I'm not aware of anything that the U.S. dominates except Third World countries, and I think we might be at the end of that ride too.
Sweden has an almost all white population, their model wouldn't work in other places.
Ya never see liberals comparing the US to a nation with a lower percentage of whites than the US has. A bunch of racists they are.
