Police Arrest 83 Protesters at Denver Columbus Day Parade
Quote:
DENVER — Police arrested 83 Columbus Day Parade protesters including American Indian Movement activist Russell Means after fake blood and dismembered baby dolls were poured on the parade route Saturday.
At least 10 of those arrested faced charges of resisting arrest, while most faced charges of blocking a parade route or interfering with a peaceful assembly, police spokesman Sonny Jackson said. The parade through downtown was delayed about an hour.
George Vendegnia, one of the organizers of the parade, said the protest and delay were planned for and caused minimal disruption.
"With this protest, it's just motivating people more to be back next year and exercise their right to participate in an American holiday," Vendegnia said.

Very sad. Why do we need this sort of hate on what should be a pleasant holiday?

As I said in the Colorado forum, this friction in Denver has been going on for years. It is almost as if both sides have chosen Denver as the place where they will make a final stand, and never give in.
The pro-Columbus day people would like to enjoy the Italian heritage and the discovery of the New World.
The protesters say that the indigenous people consider America to already have been discovered, and that Columbus is a symbol for the white man's bloody conquest.
I seem to remember that at one point, the protesters said they would back off if the name of the parade was changed, with less focus on Christopher Columbus. Apparently this never came about.

Seems to me both sides are right. The Eurocentric descendants are celebrating an effective conquest and the descendants of the original human occupants are protesting the armed conquest of their land.
Not much different from the English celebrating the conquest of Scotland and the Scots protesting the usurpation of their land and their freedom. This protest was not as violent or effective as the Zionist war against everybody that ever conquered Isreal.

While I agree that both sides have the right to express their point of view, no one has the right to violate the law in order to express those views. Both parties should be allowed to peacefully assemble and express themselves without violating the law.

So, you're saying "multiculturalism" is a bad idea, because it inevitably leads to balkanization and conflict?

They have been schooled by the liberal left wing PC crowd to whine, sue and protest and what they accomplish is the inability to live today instead of hanging onto the past.

I am sympathetic to the views of Native Americans. However, it is not as if they had no notions of conflict and war. They encountered a people (from the Old World) with whom they battled over lands, and lost. In some cases they negotiated treaties that were later thrown over by the USA. Those treaties should be vigorously litigated by the tribes, and many have been over the decades. Any and all illegal acts by the USA and its agents against the tribes should be litigated till the cows come home.

Well, whatever legitimate resentment Natives may have for "losing" to the white man, I think it's misplaced hatred focused on Christopher Columbus. North American natives had nothing to do with Columbus, and vice versa.

The Native Americans introduced tobacco to the settlers. Millions have died from tobacco related cancer and disease. This may constitute revenge of sorts.
ps: just recently prehistoric remains have been discovered in North America (history channel documentary) that point to a European presence on this continent before the Native Indians even migrated here.
Basically, the whole planet is made up of squatters anyway, in one form or another.
