Understood. Civil war lynching was not judicial but vigilante. The Kansas/Missouri Border wars was a pretty bad one and then when the Gen. Sherman made his sweep of the south, his troops lynched suspected soldiers/sympathizers and even their families (in some cases) without so much as questioning, let alone a trial.
The last documented lynching in MO happened in Sainte Genevieve in 1939.
I've heard some of the old men of the town speak of it when they had 1 too many martinis at my parents cocktail parties.
Horrifiying, to say the least.

Night Riders, reel foot lake lynched guys at Walnut Log in the 50/60's I believe. Can't remember the exact date. Pulled both of them out of the hotel, killed one, the other managed to get away and crawled through a ditch/swamp area 20 miles for help.
I grew up fishing there, most folks don't even know it exists, and there is no sign stating the awufl things that happened there. Just the legends of us locals

Same thing here, although a local is interviewing the old men/ the families of the blacks that didnt get run out of town that night, to write a book about it.
The only blacks alllowed to stay in Sainte Genevieve were the servants of the 2 wealthies families in town.

Its been a while since I've been to Skullbone TN, but they used to have a sign on your way into town saying "If your skin can't be seen at night, don't be here after dark", used to sale signs doing the same thing.
People want to see real racisim, I've seen it, grew up with it.

Yep, its alive and well in SE MO, I just spent 2 months there.
What a total waste of money! Just tack a piece of white cloth over the black OR spray paint it (hmm, perhaps that's not in someone's job description). They did look kinda odd from a distance and probably would have been more effective during daylight hours being white anyway. Someone in my neighborhood had three of those things and when I would forget they were there they scared the crud out of me (lol). As far as hangings go, that was a common method of execution in the colonies. 28 or so hung for witchcraft in Massachusetts.
Dont get me wrong, I love MO, its beautiful, I grew up there, most of my family still lives there, I own property there.
Its just the attitude of some of the citizens...
