And how is the Red Cross disseminating information about how to get help?
People were TOLD where to go for Red Cross help BEFORE the hurricane.
Obama and FEMA should have TOLD people before the hurricane that there were OTHER ways to get information...ways that could be accessed without cell or Internet service.
How is a phone going to save your life? Will that phone shield the tornado? Is that the new iphone with the tornado shelter coming out anytime soon? Gimme a break.
It will save your life when you're injured and can't save yourself
My friend did not hear from her parents until someone on her Facebook was able to check for her.
I'm able to check progress on my power coming back on
I'm able to see where they need help in my town on my town website
Should I just wander around aimlessly?
Why are you posting here? Go help em. If you pop your head outside I'm sure you can help your neighbors clean up. Maybe use your cell phones new rake and shovel attachmente you folks seem to have. Does the new iphone come with chain saws to cut through trees too? I need to get one of those. I hope it has a cooking stove too and a water purification system. Mine just calls folks.

The entire 4 days leading up to this storm we had Mayor Bloomberg on TV telling us over and over where to get info.

I'll be at the High School volunteering later tonight. Besides that we have been told not to go outside.
It could. Are you injured and can't save yourself? Are all those people cloggin the airwaves with pics and messages saving themselves?
What exactly is your point?
A cell phone is something that is important to have in an emergency. It allows you to call for help.
People are being rescued in Seaside right now because the only way they could get through to help was to post on a FB page that is being monitored by authorities.
To say a cell phone is not helpful in an emergency is ridiculous.

Your definition of life saving tool is very bizzare.
A phone can be used to call for help.
A phone can let people know where you are and how to meet up with people.
A phone can let you know where to get supplies.
A phone can keep you informed if you are in a dangerous situation or not (like if you don't have power/heat and say the temperature will drop significantly over night so you should seek assistance).
A phone can let you know of an impending event faster then any other tool (I've had tornado warnings minutes before the TV or Radio plays the EBS).
A phone can be kept on your person at all times without hinderance.
I can go on and on (and could include technical details about mobile networks backhaul systems to compound the arguement), but compare it against ANY other "tool" and it is by far the most "life saving" tool a NORMAL person can have in this country.
Why didn't these fools leave? Didn't their cell phone tell em a hurricane was coming? Or did the Gov forget to post that on facebook?
