One not part of some majority.

First, define the majority. Anybody who doesn't qualify as being of that majority qualifies as a minority.

A Mormon - one of many types of minorities.

If that doesn't describe the Mormons - I don't know what else does.

Certainly a religious minority, especially since the Mormon community be it general or local is as tightly knit as that of, say, the Sikhs.

I cringe when I hear anyone refer to nonwhites as "minorities".

Ideally, "minority" simply means "smaller in number" when compared to something of a larger number, the "majority."

Thus, the term has traditionally been used to describe any "non-white" group in the US.

These days, "minority" in the sense of race is a silly concept that no longer makes any sense in our society.

My daughter is as white as can be, down to the blue eyes and blond hair. Not a drop on non-white blood in her heritage - and I have proof all the way to the year 1079 on my side of the family and to 1493 on my spouse's. Yet, since my girl was born in Latin America and also carries a passport by her birth nation, she is considered a "minority" by some US institutions. Go figure.
