Republicans are “willing to accept new revenue” to tame the soaring national debt and avert an ugly battle over the approaching “fiscal cliff,” House Speaker John A. Boehner said Wednesday in a speech that offered a potential path to compromise in year-end budget negotiations.
With President Obama reelected and Republicans returned to a slightly smaller majority in the House, Boehner (R-Ohio) said Tuesday’s election amounted to a plea from voters for the parties to lay down their weapons of the past two years and “do what’s best for our country.”
“That is the will of the people. And we answer to them,” Boehner said, according to advance excerpts of a speech he planned to deliver at an afternoon news conference at the Capitol. “For purposes of forging a bipartisan agreement that begins to solve the problem, we’re willing to accept new revenue, under the right conditions.”
According to a source with knowledge of the call, Boehner told members Tuesday's mandate from voters to federal officeholders "is for us to work together, (and) bring solutions to the American people."
Yesterday the American People have SPOKEN ... and they got their message across BIG TIME with Republicans!!!
Or ... just perhaps Boehner knows he is up for re-election in 2014 ... and he is getting an early start at appeasing the voters just to keep his own seat in Congress?
nobody was going to do anything until the election is over. The reality is, we have a fiscal cliff, and being stubborn on either side will do us no good. My democrats will start to compromise also, and we will be able to negotiate.
waiting until the election was over and realizing that you weren't going to win the oval office or senate, and than deciding to compromise is not leadership. Real leadership is willing to compromise before waiting to see how the election will play out. Just to be clear, obama isn't any better either when it comes to leadership either, and this a democrat speaking.
