Why did the Soviet Union collapse?

Had something to do with a long, pointless, lost war in Afghanistan, didn't it?

Why USSR dissolved?
It kinda has simple answer for people who actually been born in USSR--country didnt produce anything for consumption.
Yes, as actual ex-citizen I remember this in every field--food, jobs, housing, freedoms etc.

Straw man. Liberals in the US are not advocating Soviet Style Communism/Stalinism/Leninism or Marxism.

They also fell after I joined the Danish Armed Forces, which probably had roughly as much of a causal effect. I'm a dangerous guy with an AN-PRC 25.

An oligarchic state capitalist system (USSR) proved to be inferior to a plutocratic oligarchy (USA).

Big deal. Both ideas are horrendous.

Doesn't the OP know there are these things called "books" that document the rise and fall of the USSR?

Neither was Lenin, or Stalin.

But that's what it turned out to be, anyway.

Liberals (like those two) never INTEND bad things to happen. But the plans they put into place, inevitably result in those bad things happening anyway.

Just like when the conservative, Hitler, suggested it would be a great idea to round up the Jewish.

It's arguable that the USSR collapsed from low-taxation; a State especially one built upon a government cannot remain solvent while providing every service for free while not charging its citizens enough. If I remember correctly the Soviets paid like 13% in taxes while receiving plenty of services; to be socialist you need like 40-50% per citizen. Plus it also collapsed from other reasons such as competing with the West that had far greater assets and credit than the Red States.

3 things led to the collapse
1. Regan did one major build of our forces and the Soviet union followed suit.
2. The war in Afghanistan was drawn out and once they lost their Airsuppot and the ability to resupply FOB by Air they had to use massive convoys through the tiny single lane and twisty Mountains roads to get supplies in.

So they were more open to insurgent attacks and had whole convoys taken by ambushes since they would lose the first few vehicles in the front and the rear and they were stuck in a position of being fired down and were pinned down and took a lot of casualties in those convoys. The soviet Afghan war was nicknamed the Bear trap even though we fell into the same thing two decades later and know what they went through

We armed and the people that we trained now then help train the current insurgents we are fighting using the same tactics so that came back to bite us in the Butt and if had as do over in hindsight we should of let the
Soviets roll right over the mujahedeen since we now use the bases and Airfields that the soviets build up and we reinforced them and we both flew out of Kandahar Airfield as out main heavy lift cago supply line and main base in the region.

3. Chernobyl cause such a massive cost to people and resources tat withn the war in Afghanistan going longer and eating up resources and troops coming back explaining what was really going on and the Resources used up to clean and stop the nuclear disaster they had trouble keeping up to us .

The Government was not as confident and resources to maintain such a massive fleet became to much and they Government was losing the support from the people is the Soviet Union to b using such amount of resources and the truth of the Afghanistan war coming back in the form of returning troops letting people know they were not winning like the media was saying and it was a FUBAR hellhole.

They were glasnost period and information about the bad things going on not just the accomplishments of the early part of the Cold War were now being reported by the media since they let up some of the strict censorship and that dropped moral and other soviet satellite states began wanting out of the USSR.

So they sent in troops to put down the uprising and we still kept pressure to keep building in a massive arms race and they were spent and had to much to deal with to keep going they way they were but in the end Russia today is and woth the drop of the Iron curtain.

I guess we got to know who were fighting and lets be honest we have made the same mistakes as they have in many areas and turns out Russians are all right and not the evil Ivan Dragon wanting to get you in a first strike but rather they were scared of us of a first strike that we might launch and we both thought the other was going to launch flirts and yet neither side wanted to be the one that launched the first strike do to MAD in effect.

Plus turns out communist and democratic political sides are no match for pure capitalism and China beat us at our game and both our Governments today are bought off by a few wealthy people and corporations that do not give a hoot about us and in the regard we are the same since Russian billionaires and our billionaires and lobby groups both have more influence on what policy we follow then we do.

The ones that never fought a war themselves or got bailed out from going to serve in one now put us into these wars and waste our tax dollars making themselves rich and their special interests rich friends while our infrastructure crumbles and we take all the burden to fight these wars and both then and now.

So both our fighting men and women in the armed services serving were/are getting killed in a war(s) that both sides let go too long before pulling out and now it is costing us look at the soviet union near the end and look at our economy now is and we fell into the same trap as they did and we were to blind to learn form making some of the very same mistakes as the Soviets did. back then.

In Hindsight of course
