Because for SOME people Christmas is still religious.

BINGO!

if you don't believe fine, but don't force your "don't believes" on the rest of us.

I don't think they have a problem with Christian displays. It's just that they don't want it on public property. Why an atheist had to go through such actions to be heard is beyond me. A simple memo should have been enough for the city to take into consideration.

Christmas for many if not most Americans has little to do with religion, unless your religion is consumerism.
Christmas is about a season. It's more of an excuse for shopping, giving, celebration, taking time off, etc. than about religion. That's reality. Most non-Christians do celebrate it at least one way or the other.

Atheists like to enjoy all the perks of Christmas and then turn around and vilify everything about it.

The flip side is that Christians like to enjoy all the perks of Atheists, such as sex before marriage, etc/

How is that a perk of an atheist? All a Christian has to do is go confess. You really need to read up on perks.

Well, of course the point is to do as much as possible to ruin Christmas celebrations for the rest of us.

Atheists could errect whatever monuments to their non-belief they like ten months out of the year when Christmas is not being celbrated, but then no one would care.

why the atheistic hostility to christians?

if the displays makes some people happy, WHAT IS THE PROBLEM? (even if it is on "public" property, yikes!)

some atheists seem so antagonistic, and they seem to spend a lot of their free time "objecting" to things. Aren't there any atheistic libertarians?

The atheist’s anti-God message alongside a life-sized nativity display in a park overlooking the beach ignited a debate that burned brighter than any Christmas candle. Santa Monica officials snuffed the city’s holiday tradition this year rather than referee the religious rumble, prompting churches that have set up a 14-scene Christian diorama for decades to sue over freedom of speech violations. Their attorney will ask a federal judge Monday to resurrect the depiction of Jesus’ birth, while the city aims to eject the case."
