The "kids" would still be alive if they had not committed a crime. They died as a result of their own choice,...the choice to break the law. If the "kids" were old enough to break into a home to steal, then they were old enough to know right from wrong.
I'll not judge the homeowner..... that is a job for the jury. If the man is guilty, he will be punished. I didn't walk in his shoes for 64 years, nor did I suffer repeated break-ins.
But you're willing to judge the dead based on the story of the person who killed them? The guy who shot them in the head after they were down, and rolled them up in tarps to keep for later? The guy who didn't call the police after he shot them, and, in fact, only called the police on ONE of the supposed 7 or 8 prior burglaries?

Alrighty then.
Oh,...I forgot,....the little darlings just broke the glass to gain access to the man's house so they could "clean" it for him.

Yeah?
Look, it's been explained by numerous people on the thread - if they indeed broke into his house, he was justified in shooting them. Okay? Where it breaks down is the part where he decides to execute them when they were lying bleeding on his floor. That's the point where you call in the police, not shoot people in the head. THAT is what makes him a murderer, instead of someone merely defending himself.
Read Nomander's posts on this thread - he has explained it very well. The man went too far, and now it's murder.

You can explain it a dozen times, some people just don't get it. To them it's either one way or another, there is no middle ground. Either you defend this guy or you side with lawlessness. This thread has so many strawmen you can make a village.

Yeah, I know. Every now and then, I forget this and try to dumb it down enough that even the most blood-drunk person could understand it.
What I find really disturbing is that there are some posters on this thread who seem to be almost gleeful over what this man did.
On the other hand, though, I have been pleasantly surprised at how many on the more conservative side have condemned this man's actions.
