Back in the day sure, but it wasn't a McDonald's job.
In 1975 min wage was $2.10/hour.

High school kids worked those jobs because no family could exist on $2.10/hour.

My how we've lowered that bar for the "American Dream" where burger flippers consider themselves middle class with all the trimmings and need government support to subsidize their lifestyles now.

And you guys are defending it no less.
And don't gimme the crap "the recession" because the recession has been over for 3 years now and UE is a mere 2.9% below full employment.

It's all about profit maximisation.

This is why we had slavery and indentured servants in the past, when the law allowed it.
Then just what is a burger flipper worth these days ?
What is a cashier worth ?

I'm not poor and we do not have cable or a smartphone. We have one TV, no house phone and we cook our own food nearly every day.

And that's exactly how you determine what a job is worth. Jobs are worth what the market says they are worth.

There should be NO minimum wage. Government should never tell businesses what they can pay employees.
This is true and I'll add that employees are free to ask as much as they can for their labor.
Wages are a function of supply and demand and cannot be created out of thin air by bureaucrats.

FF is a very transient job. My son has only been working at his job for 7 months now and he's already almost the senior worker there now..one other college student has been there 1 year. They come and go like the wind.

What employer would pay $15/hour for those types of workers..here today, gone tomorrow to another min wage job.

That's why you're not poor. Majority of the U.S. population has smartphones. I wonder how many of them are poor.

Quite true. I see 10 year olds with better phones than I have
Why does a 10 year old need a smartphone ? Smartphones require a data plan which is a lot more expensive then plain old talk and text.

"What type of life is someone going to have on that wage? And before you give me the tired old "well they should go to school" line, I hope you realise many people earning that wage are college graduates who can't find a job in their chosen career due to the economy."

Thus we have provided incentive to improve ones quality of life. Not happy with your situation use your creativity to improve. Most people are capable, fewer are not.

One thing no one seems to talk about is the underground economy. Look it up, it is monsterous. Many people are engaged in cash for service and the feds know nothing about it. Really it is a puzzlement why the underground economy gets no notice. As if the government winks and nods and looks the other way. Not a peep. Far greater than taxes levied on the rich in the latest economic farce discussions.

If 10K a year doesn't allow you to live in NYC then how are these people living in NYC? There is more to the story your not telling.

Raising salaries because of temporary economic difficulties is simply social justice not good business.

Do you suppose some make their hard earned cash go further than others?
Give everyone the same amount of cash and some will be broke in a NY minute while others will prosper. So it comes down to individual responsibility either at the front end or the back end. Even socialism can't get around that one.

Factually true.

As long as a 10 year old (or their parents) can afford it, it's good for them to have a smartphone.

Obviously they can afford it since the kids have the phones.
I'm in a school that is 85% on free and reduced lunch and is a Title 1 school and they can still afford it.
Go figure.
