According to Brian Williams it was a very broad decision based on the equal protection clause. Bodes well for the Prop 8 case.

The equal protection clause does not apply to same-sex marriage.

The court ruled that it denies equal liberty that is protected by the 5th amendment.

By history and tradition the definition and regulation of marriage has been treated as being within the authority and realm of the separate States.
