This was a hard article to read. On a personal note, I don't recall this ever happening when I served in Vietnam. The South Vietnamese Army troopers that I witnessed were very loyal and they respected and appreciated our presence. But it seems that the Afghan's are not that trustworthy and our troops are in harms way in their presence. We are not being appreciated for our help to them. This story is most alarming. It is a shame that our boys are having to go to bed at night in a tent trying to sleep with one eye open thinking that the Afghan trooper they have befriended could turn on them and try to kill them at any time. These two soldiers should not have been killed.

It's long past time both the Afhanis and Iraqis were given a deadline beyond which they'd be on their own, time to bring all American troops in both places home and let the chips fall where they may.

That is because we are in a bunch of BS that we never should have got into there. When we went to Afganistan, our only goal and mission should have been to find and kill those who were responsible for 9-11-01. Not to fight the Taliban, replace the government or "nation build" in Afganistan. We should have went there, hunted down Al Queada and killed them and then came home. Soldiers and Marines are trained to kill the enemy. They are not trained to "nation build".

Who are we helping and why are we there?
It's time to get out.

It's long past time to get out of Afghanistan. There is nothing and no one there worth the life of another American service man or woman. If they want to embrace the Taliban and a 12th century culture, let em.

Default another plan

IMHO - GregW alt 2 talking-

We should simply kill all the Afghan males, burn the mosques, poison the fields, loot anything of any value and bring the women back as captives. If we are going to be an Empire we should act like one.

The inhabitants of these wild but wealthy valleys are of many tribes, but of similar character and condition. The abundant crops which a warm sun and copious rains raise from a fertile soil, support a numerous population in a state of warlike leisure. Except at the times of sowing and of harvest, a continual state of feud and strife prevails throughout the land. Tribe wars with tribe. The people of one valley fight with those of the next. To the quarrels of communities are added the combats of individuals. Khan assails khan, each supported by his retainers. Every tribesman has a blood feud with his neighbor. Every man's hand is against the other, and all against the stranger.

Winston Churchill, The Story of the Malakand Field Force: An Episode of Frontier War (1898)

Perhaps some former Sepoy, of Beluchis or Pathans, will recount his adventures in the bazaars of Peshawar, or tell of the white officers he has followed and fought for in the past. He will speak of their careless bravery and their strange sports; of the far-reaching power of the Government...Then the Mullah will raise his voice and remind them of other days when the sons of the prophet drove the infidel from the plains of India, and ruled at Delhi, as wide an Empire as the Kafir holds to-day: when the true religion strode proudly through the earth and scorned to lie hidden and neglected among the hills: when mighty princes ruled in Bagdad, and all men knew that there was one God, and Mahomet was His prophet. And the young men hearing these things will grip their Martini [rifles], and pray to Allah, that one day He will bring some Sahib -- best prize of all -- across their line of sight at seven hundred yards so that, at least, they may strike a blow for insulted and threatened Islam. …

Churchill, op. cit.
