First of all, Obama didn't have a super majority for 2 years.
In other words he has absolutely no interest in compromise or bi-partisanship and can only push through his master plan when he has absolute control. He has zero desire to work with the representatives of over 1/2 of the country.
The reason he didn't push for it is he wanted to be re-elected, period. Even the democrats have figured out that the American people don't want more gun control and pushing for it costs them elections.

In other words, if Obama wanted to pursue legislation, he couldn't because the representatives of over half the country would block it.

Under half of the country, you mean. And in any case, we've seen republicans vote in lockstep against their own proposals because Obama endorsed them (eg. The deficit commission, aid for veterans), so I think we'll know that it's actually congressional republicans who are uninterested in compromise. And we've also seen republicans who did occasionally work with Obama get defeated in republican primaries, so we know that it's actually the GOP base that cares more about opposing the president than thy do about the country.

People don't want gun control?
I bet you also thought Romney was going to win in a landslide.
What a horrible excuse you've perpetrated! Using your logic, nothing would ever get done in Washington if the modus operandi was to abide by the will of the naysayers!
Get real! Leadership is not an abstract. It actually involves LEADING. Which Barack Obama simply does not know how to do.
Of course leadership is abstract. I know abstract might be a confusing word for some, but it means it is not a tangible thing. And leadership is not tangible, it's a thought. An idea.
You're learning though, it's ok.
