Their goal is the banning of private firearm ownership some time in the distant future by generating seemingly useless feel good laws that evebntually accumulate to ban firearms. the unfortunate thing is they sacrifice lives today to achieve their goal tomorrow.
You'd think that if strict laws don't significantly reduce the downstream violence from gangs and drugs some other strategy might be considered. Bet they all know someone who buys illegal drugs to support the violence they abhor. Be sure to thank all your friends who buy illegal drugs for subsidizing the central source of violence.

While I am not crazy about guns, leave it to the NRA to play off people's fear about shooting deaths like Newport, I don't recall any major problem prior to the change of the 2nd amendment. And the all mighty leader of the NRA saying the only way to stop a bad guy is a good guy with a gun how does this work.

The NRA represents the worst in fanatical single issue ideologically extreme special interest groups. They thrive by promoting fear and paranoia. Every massacre of children increases gun sales for their donors. Today at conference, they were distracting public from talking about gun laws by blaming massacre on Hollywood, video games and instead talked about hiring more armed security guards on tax payer's money. An ideal business opportunity to boost more gun sales for their donors! The same right wing propagandizers discourage from talking about stricter gun control, funding mental health programs and ignore bullying that goes in schools and colleges that really do contribute to violence a lot more than movies.
Remember the good ole days, When they used 6 shot 38"s, with a short barrel, and you had to aim at something to hit it. As apposed to punks now with 15-18 shot autos that just spray bullets at just anyone. Ah, I miss those days.
