Small footnote: John Baird PC MP, Canadian Minister for Foreign Affairs, whose first press conference with Secretary Kerry just ended minutes ago, is
almost-but-not-quite-openly gay.
No one in Canada seems to care whether he is or isn't. The most sensational media attention he ever received had nothing to do with his sexual preference; his cat, which he called "Thatcher", died and he sent out a text: "Thatcher is dead". Some assumed he meant Margaret Thatcher, and so he unintentionally sparked a rumour about the Baroness' premature demise.
So that's the state of homosexuality as a political issue north of the border. The death of the cat of a senior Conservative cabinet minister attracts more attention than whether he's gay.
