Since the hand out crowd will continue to get their handouts can we at least
get them off the couch and giving back to those who support them?

I would like to see a program that requires anyone on welfare or unemployment for
over 1 year to volunteer 20 hours per week.

This could be done by teaching a kid to read, volunteering at a library, picking up
trash along our roadways or in their own neighborhood.

They could spend time at a senior citizens home with those desperate for human contact
or deliver meals to shut ins. There are literally thousands of ways to help out a little.

America should make this happen! It's a win/win for all and if the volunteer does a good job
a job offer might come along. It should make them feel better about themselves because they
are doing something positive instead of just taking. America gets cleaned up, kids learn to read, etc.

I've been saying this all along.

This was floated in the UK. Nothing much came from it as the public sector unions decided it would be a threat to their membership. Unions control political parties, taxpayers dont.

The lack of response to this by the liberal crowd is shocking!

NOT!

C'mon people, tell me why this isn't being discussed with as much vigor
as the tax hike?

In other words, mandatory AmeriCorps -- a program that was created by Bill Clinton and is much loathed by conservatives.

Because they don't want to work for their hand outs.

I think something should be required of those accepting hand outs. Even if it's just picking up trash on the side of the highway.

Bad idea. This would pave the way for mandatory national service. The better way is to not extend unemployment for 99 weeks and quit growing the food stamp program by 40%.

Something along the lines of the CCC (Civilian Conservation Corps) from the FDR days would be a good start. There is no reason for an able bodied (or at least able-minded) adult to be on the dole and sitting idle.

The tricky part would be in making sure that such a program does not interfere with free enterprise. That is, you don't want these make-work programs taking away jobs from the private sector.

Also, people on the program should still be counted as unemployed.
