The gun ban worked so well that the peak murder total occurred 10-12 years after it went into effect?

You have an interesting definition of a ban "working".

Actually it should be fairly easy and all Chicago would have to do is follow in the footsteps of Brooklyn. Boerum Hill was an inner neighborhood that was so dangerous that if you called the cops because your life was in danger, they would show up later that day to pick up your body. Today, Boerum Hill is one of the nice neighborhoods in Brooklyn.

The murder rate in Chicago has ZERO to do with guns, and EVERYTHING to do with gangs.
Pretty much. 80% of the murders are gang related.

Check out this map. Violent crime is 3-4% in the bad areas while other parts of Chicago are as safe as some idyllic small town.

If all of the United States was like the Austin neighborhood in Chicago....we'd have over 120,000 murders a year in this country.

Let that one sink in everybody.

Gambrini Green is already history. It's a start. That place was nasty. My car got pelted with bricks and bottles when we got too close to it.

People loved Giuliani after 9-11 but prior to that you cannot crack down like that without facing some withering attacks.

Basically, Chicago lacks the political will to do what is needed.

Prominent New York minister labels Giuliani a racist Mayor's actions decried as leading to fascist state - Baltimore Sun

They just pushed those people to the westside and the southside....freeing up valuable real estate and keeping the poor away from the gold coast and tourist areas.

That's what the residents of the rest of the city want. Rahm is basically doing what his base is asking him to do, sweep the problem under the rug. They only complain when it comes to their neighborhood, otherwise they don't care.

It looks like Rahms strongest support came from the wealthy areas, oddly enough, he also had strong support in poorer Black communities.

And interestingly, Austin adjoins very intergrated, semi-affluent Oak Park and the gang activity stops at the border or goes around to Maywood. Given the culture and politics of Oak Park, I am reasonably certain that it's not fear of encountering gun owners in Oak Park that keeps the gangs out.
