Wouldn't surprise me, but they could do better than to emulate a bunch of poor rednecks.
"Redneck culture" is historically dysfunctional and violent. Some of the killing over "being disrespected" has a strong parallel with the "Honor Culture" of the South. Insulting someone's wife could get you killed in the South. "Ghetto culture" comes from "redneck culture", so I disagree with emulating "redneck culture".
No, it's not just his opinion. The history of inner-city culture has been written about extensively. There is a lot of evidence that when there were large migrations of southern blacks and whites to northern areas like Chicago or Detroit, that they also brought their southern culture with them.
And, as I just posted in another thread, even physiological evidence. Check it out:
"Three experiments examined how norms characteristic of a "culture of honor" manifest themselves in the cognitions, emotions, behaviors, and physiological reactions of southern White males. Participants were University of Michigan students who grew up in the North or South. In 3 experiments, they were insulted by a confederate who bumped into the participant and called him an "*******." Compared with northerners-who were relatively unaffected by the insult-southerners were (a) more likely to think their masculine reputation was threatened, (b) more upset (as shown by a rise in cortisol levels), (c) more physiologically primed for aggression (as shown by a rise in testosterone levels), (d) more cognitively primed for aggression, and (e) more likely to engage in aggressive and dominant behavior. Findings highlight the insult-aggression cycle in cultures of honor, in which insults diminish a man's reputation and he tries to restore his status by aggressive or violent behavior."
So even though the Southern males were now students in the North, they brought their "southern culture" of defending honor and the importance of respect/disrespect with them !
Every business owner knows a black female can bring a law suit for just about any allegation she wants to make, but white males are almost never a threat to sue no matter badly they are treated.
When conflicts arise in the workplace, they know they have to do everything possible to side with the black female even if she is clearly wrong and/or harassing her co-workers.
So even though the Southern males were now students in the North, they brought their "southern culture" of defending honor and the importance of respect/disrespect with them !
Which is now gang wars, turf and drugs.
Some "defending honor" that's turned out to be..a very warped morphing of southern culture.
Thomas Sowell is not the know all see all, this is his opinion.
It is not just his opinion ! There is such a thing as sociologists and historians who study things like this. They don't just write down their opinions. Also, see the study I just posted above. Better still, go and read the study and you will see how many scholars have written about this topic.
